Atlanta Braves Thread (I HURT MYSELF TODAY TO SEE IF I STILL FEEL)

I hadn't heard about this until just now.

The man is an imbecile. As if the season weren't enough of a disappointment as it is, now we're the butt of all jokes for eternity.

I beg of Purdue to hire this man.

I'm sorry, I guess I must be the idiot here because I'm the only one not outraged by this whole situation but I don't see how anyone can read or hear the "champions of life" comment in the context of the question and the entire answer and actually think it was some unforgivable sin.

I realize other fan bases are going to have their fun with it, we would do the same if the shoe was on the other foot and the photoshopped image of JRM holding the LIFE game was hilarious, but what am I missing here? What sin was committed other than a middle aged white dude being corny while attempting to praise the outgoing players who he built the program back up with?

The sin is making his program and his fanbase into a laughingstock at the worst possible time.

A big part of this nimrod's job is to manage the media and the messaging around the program. And he's clueless about it. He's got to understand how hollow the corny rah-rah stuff sounds right now. He also needs to be media-savvy enough to know that he has become an object of ridicule in the college football world, and that that is not gonna help him in recruiting.

I'm sure he's bitter as hell that he's about to improve to 9-3 despite an injury-ravaged season, and yet he's being asked to sit up there in the press conference and apologize for it. I'm sure he thinks it's unfair that the only thing people are taking away from this season is the South Carolina game. But he's got to understand time and place and what it's like in the SEC, and for once he needed to skip the cheesy crap. Nobody wants to hear what fine young men you're molding when you choked away the division and you're giving up 600 yards a game.

This is why coaches should just stop the charade of talking to the media as if there's ever going to be anything insightful said. If you read the context of the quote, it's clear he's just praising a group of Seniors. Pissed off fans just see the quote and think he's talking about participation trophies and smell blood.

We'll just agree to disagree on this one but when the full story looks like this:

For context Butch was asked about his emotions for senior day

That's not corny rah-rah stuff. That's a coach speaking honestly (but using a corny phrase) to talk about a group of players who are probably some of, if not the, most meaningful players to his career that he's ever coached.

It sounds like something you'd say to a middle school basketball team that just lost their championship game.

I coach a whole lot of 14-18 years olds and there's no way in hell that would even cross my mind. Plus they would laugh any one out of the room if they said that.

Full quote, no quote, full context, no context..

You cannot say "the championship of life"

You just can't

I agree. He's a cliché machine and not particularly articulate on the fly. Prototypical football coach.

Right.. all his answers are rehearsed. That's what's so bad here. The phrase was premeditated. He entered the press conference knowing he was going to drop "championship of life" and couldn't see that was a poor choice.

I really don't think it was rehearsed. I think it's just an inarticulate way of saying " What I'm most proud of is they have become before my eyes and the great futures that lie ahead of them."

At least, that's what I'm hoping.

IMO the motivational catchphrase-spouting is a far more integral part of Jones's public persona and messaging than most football coaches'. He takes it way beyond the usual football/competition cliches into the really eyeroll-inducing Tony Robbins-type crap. It was obvious three years ago that it was going to start ringing really hollow if he didn't win, and here we are.

I don't know if it was premeditated or not, but "They've won the biggest championship -- the championship of life" is a complete thought that he has got to know that he can't go anywhere near. That's not being inarticulate, it's being tone deaf.

Will it matter? Only if being ridiculed hurts him in recruiting. The "You can go to Tennessee a be a champion of life, or you can go to Florida and win the east" stuff writes itself.

This will be my last comment on the topic because, let's face it, this is the internet and nobody is changing their opinion based on a message board discussion.

I've said on here multiple times that I think Jones' ceiling as a coach is just good. If he stays at UT long term I think his over/under going into every season for wins is probably around 8.5 with a +/- of 1 or 2 games so I don't really think that puts me in the category of those who are all in on Butch but I think him getting killed by our own fans over this particular incident is beyond ridiculous.

And as for recruiting, I'm sure you're right that opposing coaches will use something along the lines of what you said and I'm sure it will work from time to time. However, I also know that there are two kids in this year's class that were raised by a single mother and are coming to UT in large part because she and her kids have heard comments along those same lines of what Butch was trying to express in the press conference and they honestly believe them to be true. I'll probably never personally know 100% sure that another recruit/family settled on UT because of that fact but I think I can make an educated guess that they aren't the only ones that feel that way.

The tough thing that's now shaping up for the next month is a win on Saturday gives us our best season in 9 years and will probably make Butch (somewhat rightfully) defiant. Meanwhile, the fans will be (somewhat rightfully) disappointed.

Merry Christmas
