Athlon's "hot seat" list

Top 10 is not a good place to be. Rich Brooks was there last year.

he may not really be #1, but he needs a freaking wake-up call because it has been somewhat dissappointing some of the stuff he has pulled off the last few years, and im getting sick of it... i hope he just uses this as some sort of motivation because im sure deep down in Phil's heart that there is some aggresiveness stored down there

Yes, could be a good and welcomed wake up call. Not sure it will really make much difference in the day to day, but any extra motivation couldn't hurt.

Why would you disagree with him being #1 on the "hot-seat?" We are a program and fanbase that demands national prominence, and we have been outside looking in since the title in '98. That will have been 10 years after this season.

No SEC titles since. No BCS since '99. Bad beatings at home. A losing season two years ago. Losing to Vanderbilt. And, now, lacking what has been our primary staple over the years: dominant line play, a smash-mouth running game, and plenty of reliable receivers.

Sorry to sound all doom and gloom, but we aren't Ole Miss or South Carolina. 9-3 won't cut it for me this year. It's "put up or shut up" time for the Fulmer regime. Can he, Cut, and Cheif get it done? I think they have a chance. But, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome and holes to fill. I guess we'll see in about 57 days.

I don't see that it really matters whether he is #1 or #7. Everyone, including him, knows that there is growing dissatisfaction with the team's performance and current station in the SECE. In fact, if anything, UT fans should be pleased that he ranks #1 on this one particular version of the list. Perhaps it will get his attention all the more.

Agreed, LG...back in the day, the team had the swagger, the confidence, the intimidation factor...on game day, I used to be fairly confident in the outcome. Here lately, when KY and Vandy games begin to worry me, well...let's just say I long for the upbeat days of long ago.

Despite my comment in the rivalries section about you guys and UT, the truth is I've stopped taking any SEC game for granted.

So true...outside conferences can say what they want, but all the SEC does is beat each other up to where it is a near miracle that a team from the SEC can make it all the way.

I don't know of any Vol fan that isn't ready for a change if we don't have a great year.I just hate to start the season off sounding defeated even prior to hitting the field.I choose to stay optimistic and celebrate if coach Fulmer pulls a rabbit out of his hat this year.He did bring us a N/C and prior to his hire Majors had started stinking it up.I just hope the team gives me a nice birthday gift this year when 9/15 rolls around.

Majors had started stinking it up? It was time for Majors to go, but our program was a top ten program when he was let go. I wish we were stinking it up with 11 and 10 win seasons, and finishing in the top 10 now. It wasn't like Fulmer inherited a rebuilding job. It's not a stretch to say that this program is in worse shape now than where it was when Fulmer took over.

I'm with you, hoping Fulmer pulls a rabbit out of the hat. If Fulmer hasn't had a wake up call by now, that wakeup call being 5-6, not winning an SEC title in several years, and no BCS game in an eternity, then I am not sure a publication voting him on the hot seat will wake him up.

His destiny is partially in his own hands.

Here's how I see it:

10+ wins & SEC Championship - He can choose his own path (I think he may really retire after his next successful season. Especially if he sees Gruden as a realistic possibility to take over. Fulmer is a UT fan and alum after all.)

8 - 10 wins & no SEC Championship - He's fine unless Gruden is on the market and interested. If Gruden is on the market and interested, Fulmer's gone.

Less than 8 wins - Hamilton will offer Saban like money to Gruden to get him back on Rocky Top. Fulmer will "Retire".

If Gruden turns the Bucs around and doesn't show interest in the UT job, I think that Fulmer gets to keep his job barring a 7 win or less season.

Why do people think Gruden would want to come here? Are we going to shell out $4million plus to our next coach? He's a pro guy, and can get that in the pros. Even though he hasn't had much success lately, he's still got to be highly regarded by some. I mean, it would be great if he would come here, but I am a realist, too.

He has a history with the University. I think the Alumni and fan base will demand a big time coach when Fulmer finally leaves the hill, and he would certainly fit the bill.

Well I'm glad to hear at least one person has made the coice to remain optimistic until proven otherwise. Here's to you utfantilidie :toast:.....although I must admit even my patience is running a little thin

Who would have thought Georgia would have beaten Auburn last season just a week after losing it's 4th out of the last 5?

There's no doubt that on any given Saturday in the SEC....
