At what point does it stop?

So the ACC & SEC are comparable? Recruiting at FSU is harder than recruiting at Tennessee? And Tennessee had "much success" in the modern era of SEC football, as evident by being unranked 13 times in 15 seasons before Fulmer took over the offense & recruiting in 1989?

The other truth about Fulmer haters -- delusional about the UT past pre-Fulmer.

Um...that 15 year period encapsulates an entire decade of mediocrity and doesn't bother to stretch back any further. Before then, huge success. That was really the only extended period of time without "much success," and even then they weren't terrible.

Fulmer will be remembered in a much better light once his last few classes leave and Tennessee starts winning again.

It's hard to not be pissed when the upcoming senior/rs junior class has maybe 8 contributors on it and 4 freshmen were forced to start on the OL due to poor recruiting up front. Also, having two DTs worth a damn (I like Wes Brown but he was not a true DT) on the roster when he left is another reason people get upset.

People gloss over his success in the 90's due to Spurrier consistently breaking one off in Fulmer.

As a recently turned 50 year old, I believe Fulmer did some good things early and then coasted because he never believed he would be fired. Losing records are losing records. Discipline problems galore and underachieving teams don't result in longevity for anyone, ask saint Bobby Bowden.

^This I appreciate what he did the first 10 years but he got complacent. Time to move on.

Quite right.

Demographics of Vol fans --

20's or under: Fulmer was some "old" guy who was "lazy" as purportedly evident by the fact we "should have" won SEC titles every other year and "at least" a few national titles at Tennessee

30's & 40's: a heck of a run that ended, but a good guy who just didn't have it left in the tank

50's & older: even the last 5 years was better as a whole than what Tennessee football looked like prior to Fulmer's arrival as a major coach on the hill in the modern era of SEC football (many older fans knew Vol football was going to change a lot once Florida woke up from their football nap and once SEC football became truly integrated); fans who experienced the 70's & 80's as a whole would never so easily attack Fulmer at all

Majors' fans: still too drunk to make sense

Indeed quite right. In addition, I think I've finally found the explanation for the 50+ outliers of DVD and BPV - Majors' fans.

When you consider 2008 would have been a bowl victory year (remember those?) without the Hambone Experiment, than the last five years under Fulmer, while not the greatest of his tenure, was certainly way above average.

I think Fulmer took his foot off the gas for a couple of years on the recruiting cycle, but I do believe he was hungry again when Hambone lubricated his machinations. Had Fulmer been here, we would have been in the SECCG this year with wins over Florida and LSU. It would have been a great season even if we couldn't stop Cam.

He was paid millions to do a job and he "took his foot of the gas"?

That's unacceptable for a coach to do.

No one can rest on past accomplishments in the coaching business.

Beating Florida and LSU wouldn't put us in the SEC Championship game, nor would it have been possible with Phil at the helm.

He earned it, because he took a loaded squad and won 5 games, then got rid of some horrible coaches and won 9 games, which was great in comparison.

The carousel has been spinning like crazy the last few years, yet Fulmer remains a head coach without a team.

They tell a player he's only good as his last game. A boxer is only as good as his last fight, well a coach is only as good as his last season and Fulmer sucked. Sure that might not be the best way to remember someone by but the last time Muhammad Ali stepped into the ring he got drummed. He wasnt the "floatin like a butterfly, stingin like a bee" Ali that everyone knew. Fulmer wasnt a breath of fresh air for the Vols who had start recruits. The game had well passed him by.

Do Miami fans revere Larry Coker? Do LSU fans love Les Miles? No, because they realize that bad coaches luck into titles sometimes. We apparently don't, since we kept him around long enough to make us worse than South Carolina...and since some here love him even though he throws our program under the bus every chance he gets, saying we should have kept him even though he STILL doesn't have a job. Think about Miles getting fired and then using a TV gig to constantly b*tch about how great he was. Does that not make you mad?

Ive personally always wondered how good a coach actually was at a place like Tennessee, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas etc. I mean they're big schools with strong fan bases, its very easy to recruit good players and with good players you dont have to do that serious of coaching. What about these places that are seen as "hole in the walls" like TCU, Boise St, Utah etc. How good of a coach do you have to be to not only get recruits to go there but to make them good enough to actually win. As much as I despise Urban Meyer, its one thing I was afraid of when he went to Florida is that he excelled in a place that isnt "on the map" and now he's in the big time. The same can be said for Dooley (from La Tech) and Al Golden (from Temple, now at Miami), what will these 2 guys do now that they are in big time schools.

Fulmer was an excellent coach but the game had just passed him up.It was just his time to go. He is still all vol. No need to hate on the man.

Why do most of you go out of your way to insult Fulmer? I know I will get buried for this thread but I don't care. The level of hate that he gets is unjustified.

So many of this fanbase are complete ingrates and only see the last 5 years of his tenure as applicable.

At what point, do we as fans move on?

It was his time to go but that doesn't mean we have to go to the greatest lengths available to insult the man.

+1

Stoops is good, but the other ones deserve questions. Mack Brown sucks...I'd be much more afraid of Texas if they had Gary Patterson than Brown.

I will never understand it. I'm probably showing my age a litte here, but I remember a time when UT's season was defined by the Alabama game. Not, do you think we'll win the NC next year?, Not, do you think we'll win the SEC next year?, Nope, just will we beat Alabama next year. For the love of God, we won 100 games and a national chapionship in the 90's. Phil Fulmer was the coach, he did nothing short of a FANTASTIC job. Yes, he may have lost the edge in the latter years, but he did a whole lot more good than bad. The man is still a supporter of Tenn football, still at heart a Vol, and played football here. WHY, WHY, WHY all the hate? I just dont understand. Will someone that truly hates CPF explain to me, in not some short smart ass joke about his weight, or any of that stuff, why you hate. Serious answers only please.
