At what point does a junior QB hurt us less than losing in recruiting?

This is the real question that our staff is facing. The only reason we could possibly stick with Crompton at QB now is for the sake of QB recruiting...but at what point does losing games hurt us more than having a possible starter for next year??? We had a some key prospects in the stands today and todays performance had to hurt. I don't want to panic here, but Crompton was clearly playing scared today.

Scared as always. Winning is key in recruiting. It's time for Stephens.

Kiffin will not accept another performance from Crompton like today or all the Stephens fans will see him get a shot.

Still think it's better to start Crompton next week and pray for divine intervention then throwing a QB that is just as bad to the wolves.

If Crompton throws another 3 INTs, I have little doubt Stephens will take over possibly in game and if not Ohio.

or because Nick Stephens is worse. I don't think Stephens was our solution last year either. At the end of the day its about winning not recruiting and our staff knows that if they need to play a guy they will but before today nothing had showed this staff that they should consider Stephens when he is outplayed on a daily basis in practice.

Kiffin himself has said the competition between the two has been extremely close. Crompton is not a bad quarterback until he gets in a high pressure situation. It doesn't really matter how good you are in practice if you can't hit the broad side of a barn in a game situation. If he thought that was tough, he might actually dookie his pants in gainsville next week! but joking aside, i think stephens deserves a shot. he can't be worse than what crompton was today.

Look......we've got an adequate Oline that gonna take time to gel against real competition. Crompton has always been a practice qb and never a game time qb, we've known this for some time and hopefully now Kiffin knows this too. Stephens might not be the answer but at least he doesn't fold after a bad TO and just maybe he's not the practice qb but a better game time qb. Don't know but he needs a chance.

Our O-line is subpar at best. I miss the days when our line imposed their will on the opponent.

Looks like some on here have learned nothing from 2005 and 2008.

Hate to break it to you, but as bad as Crompton is, there isn't anyone else on campus right now who's better.

At what point do all these idiots on here yik yakking learn and understand that if we had a better QB in the system, at any level of experience or promise, they would be starting. Love it or hate it JC was the only choice. Now, do you give another the opportunity to step up. Maybe so. But probably not till after the UF game. You don't make that change for next week and put a QB that couldnt beat JC out in that position.

Winning=good recruiting. Just win and recruiting will be easy. The answer is not Nick Stephens. I know it is hard to imagine, but Crompton is better than Stephens. I don't think switching Stephens out for Crompton will negatively affect recruiting either because he sucks too. Any recruit knows they can come to UT and have a shot at the starting gig next year.

Although it makes me vomit in my mouth a little to say it, I agree that you cannot drop Crompton at this point. If Kiffin had any ideas about it, he should have done it at the half during todays game.

The real problem is that he made public his intention not to rotate QBs which I thought/think is a mistake. The rationale is that it puts too much pressure on the QBs thinking that if they make a mistake they will get dropped. Well, this is the SEC and if you can't handle that pressure, you should have picked a school in another conference.

The problem with that is that Kiffin knew it would have been a veiled threat at best since we could probably rotate through every guy who has ever played QB and never have better results.

Still though, I think it better to try to win with the next guy on the bench than keep losing with the guy that is obviously not getting the job done.

Crompton is single handily killing this team....Seriously...The last guy who hitched his wagon up to him got run out of town...If Crompton really loved this team and this school he would step down and let Stephens run the team for awhile without the embarrassment of being pulled and replaced...I could appreciate a decision like that but I doubt that is going to happen.

we said that last year. that after seeing a bad QB like crompton, good qbs should rush to our school to play and take his spot. but it didnt happen

Problem is, it doesn't really go that way. Alot of good qbs now seem to want to go to schools to become good pro prospects. Unfortunately, as far as developing pro qbs goes, we developed one really, really good qb, but we haven't developed anymore in over 10 years

honestly agreed. if stephens were better, he wouldnt be sitting second on the depth chart right now, but would be playing

Strongly disagree. Stephens played very well in a terrible situation last year. When Fulmer, after putting the team and fans through HELL with Crompton, met NS out on the field and beratted him publicly, I lost all respect for him. His game play FAR exceeded JC's and CPF obviously held different standards for the two. He, like a child, took out his frustration on the kid and made him the target of his animosity with being forced to make the change. That single moment doomed the rest of an already horrible situation. If Kiffin will adjust this week and not look back, we will be far better off.

Stephens played very well last year?? Are you referring to Craig Stephens of the Titans? Might want to go take a look at his stats. He completed less than half of his pass attempts last season. He did the same thing in the scrimmages this fall.

There's a reason he couldn't win the starting job under two different staffs and I saw enough out of him last year to know he is no better of an option.

Stephens didn't complete half of his passes last year. Even Crompton did that, awful as he was.

I'm not comparing him to Tebow. I'm comparing him to Crompton. Kiff said the slate was clean. Crompton practices well, but meltsdown in EPIC fashion under pressure EVERY time. Frankly, he gets worse with experience. There is no way that NS can be worse than how JC performs in "real-time" game situations

But stephens just really isnt that much better than crompton. If he was, the guy would already have been starting ahead of crompton...

I know it's nice to have the "backup is the most popular guy on the team setup," but in this case we all know both these quarterbacks are really bad

Both of them stare down their receivers, don't go through their progressions and seem to make all around poor choices with the football. Were stuck with them, but if Crompton is that off target then i can't see us leaving him out there. Florida is going to have a field day with him.
