At what point do we crack the top 25 this season? (merged)

Tennessee cracks the top 25 after 2-0 only if the original top 25 go 0-2. Not enough pull in those two opponents to give you any credibility, unless you lose and get bad credibility. If UT wins the games it should and beats either Bama or GA with only other loss to FLA, then you could justify putting TN in the top 25.

Just thought I'd dig this one back up to re-visit the question after our opening game performance. We picked up 28 points after bashing WKU. How high will we go if we bash UCLA by 20?

Not very often that a thread I started gets dug up, but I'm glad that it has. I said in the OP that 2 very convincing wins could get us into the top 25, I really believe that now. If we come out this week and stomp a mud hole in the Bruins we will be in the top 25. I see UGA possibly dropping out and maybe even Notre Dame. If we can maintain and build off last weeks momentum we will be very successful.

GO VOLS

I just want a win against UCLA, but if we get a convincing win then we will crack the top 25 for the first time in the Lane Kiffin era. I personally wish we were unranked going into The Swamp though.

I doubt a 4-1 record will do it unless UT plays Florida reasonably close. Beating W-KY, UCLA, Ohio and Awbarn probably won't be impressive enough to crack it. But if UGA beats OK St. to open its season and remains undefeated and then UT beats UGA and goes to 5-1, UT should definitely crack the top 25 and probably the top 20. Short of UT beating Florida, that's the soonest I would expect to see it happen.

We'll be top 25 next week. A 4-1 record and we'll be top 15. You're dumb. 5-1? lol we'd be near the top 10 by then

I might be dumb and I've been called worse. Understand though, I wasn't trying to diss UT.

You might be right about UT getting in sooner and advancing higher in the rankings than I initially anticipated, especially if UT continues to rack up "style points" like it in the WK beatdown. Plus, if UCLA and Auburn do well other than losing to UT that will help. Given those considerations, I could definitely see UT being ranked pretty decently with a 4-1 record.

It's hard to really tell because it depends to some extent on what happens with the teams currently ranked, as well as other teams who, like UT, are getting some votes now. It even depends somewhat on how the teams you beat do in their other games.

Tennessee is already top-25 in my heart. I don't think they'll get a ranking like that in reality unless they are sitting at 4-1, with a (relatively) good showing in the Florida game.

Assuming we're talking AP right now we're sitting 34th after beating the 29.5 underdog WKU by 56. We jumped 4 spots after starting out at 38th last week. UCLA was 44th last week and is now at 37th having jumped 7 spots after beating 19.5 point underdog SDSU by 19.

Notre Dame started out at 23rd last week and jumped 5 spots to 18 after beating a weak 14.5 point underdog Nevada team. 6.5 point underdog Miami was 36th last week, beats FSU, and jumps 16 spots to 20. Now that's a jump.

Being at home we're favored by 8 over the Bruins. If we appear to just beat them handily by maybe two or three touchdowns then I think we could jump maybe 5 to 7 spots which would land us from 29th to 27th. We beat Florida and we're in big time. If Miami jumped 16 spots by beating a 6.5 point favored FSU then we easily jump 10 to 15 spots ( I would hope ).

It's not inconceivable to think that if we blow UCLA absolutely out of the water similar to the way we beat WKU then we could possibly land at 25. We only have to move up 9 spots. Again, we beat UCLA 55 to 7 and it's possible. Not likely mind you....but possible. Plus, of course it depends on what everyone else does.

At the end of the day we just need to beat UCLA handily...go to the swamp and win one at the end on a crazy long field goal and WE'RE BACK!

But let's take care of UCLA first because if we get smoked by them then we won't be having this discussion again for quite some time.

If this all sounds foolish I'm sure you guys will let me know. I had a little time on my hands.

we will be 22-23 saturday after the stomping we will give the bruins, then when we pull the upset we will be top 15

So much depends upon factors outside of the control of the VOLs, but I think a convincing win against the bruins has us knocking on that door, especially with the hype it would help produce for the fla game, i.e. "Here come the new VOLS and their brash young coach fresh off a win against UCLA and breaking in at #25 this week...blah blah blah!"

We will be in the top 25 only and ONLY when ESPN and associates wants us to be in. They have basically hijacked college sports and the ranking "formula". They can put whatever team they feel should be in a spot, and no one complains.

Let's look at some of the Rankings. #23 Cincinnati a very nice ranking for them since they literally dismantled the "preseason" favorite for the Big East Championship. I do not even mean the score, they literally beat the hell out of Rutgers. They pulled their QB with about 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. They took a guy who won a QB battle from the spring and the summer, and made him look foolish....so bad that the head coach pulled him for a true freshman whom was only supposed to take a set of snaps to get some game experience. Yeah definately only #23.

#7 Ohio State, only dropped one spot. Does anyone remember when we played Air Force and we could not stop the triple option. Well everyone was shocked about how close the game was. Ohio State could have gone into the final 90 seconds with the game tied if they score a 2-pt conversion. Navy the team with NO VOTES for Top 25 ranking. Does ESPN really want a college football fan not to believe that this ranking isn't for the USC/OSU game on saturday night. Now once OSU loses by 30 points hopefully OSU would drop into the 20s.

Finally the top 10 rankings. If you play one of those dumb games of guess who is who, look at this comparison.

A)
My team gave up an opening drive touchdown and then proceeded to blank the opposing team for the next 25 minutes of the game. If not for a bomb by the opposing team kicker it would have been a shutout for the rest of the game. We took a highly touted front seven and rushed for 172 yards. We played a team with possibly the best offensive line in their division and kept them to under 100 yds rushing. We played the #13 team in the nation.

B)
We played Akron but we are ranked Higher than the team above since we played a team with a below .500 record last year in the MAC we got to move up past the team right behind us.

This whole ranking is a joke. Tell me who should be #1 in the nation on Monday morning (sept 14th). Florida who will have convincing wins against Charleston South and Troy or USC who will have an equally convincing win against San Jose St. and Ohio State?

Though I don't always agree with the way some teams get preferenial treatment in the polls, to make the case that ESPN has sole control over the rankings is to assume that the only members of the media that are allowed to vote work for ESPN. And as for the question of who should be ranked higher between UF and USC, it depends on whether you are basing your decision on who you believe is the better team or which one has accomplished more. I have to believe that they go with the team that they believe is the best; if not, the top 5 would look like this: BYU, OSU, Bama, Boise St, and Maimi. :ermm:

Keep winning games, maybe top 25 after UCLA depends on others around CF. top 5 if we take out UF. but it really doesnt matter, just one game at a time the rankings will follow

Early season polls are poor predictors of the actual playing ability of the teams. It doesn't really matter what we are ranked until the back half of the season. I will say that we will be noticed if we beat Florida. Other than that i would say 4-1 after Auburn. 3-1 won't cut it with our wins being WKU, UCLA, and Ohio.

guys were still Tennessee. If we beat UCLA convincingly then we will be in the top 25 plus it gives ESPN and the AP voters a better story line for the week ahead against UF

If we crush UCLA then we will just be inside the top 20. When I say crush, I mean by thirty points. Is that going to happen...very unlikely. If we beat them soundly, then we will be 22-23 in the rankings. If we barely beat them then we have a very outside chance of sneaking into the 24-25 position. If we lose, then I will cry myself to sleep.

the question is.. once we crack it, by how many weeks will we break the all time record for consecutive weeks in the top 25?:rock:

If we beat Florida, we're in the top 20. If we don't beat florida, I'd say if we are in the area of 6-1 or 5-2 then we get into the top 25 with wins over UGA and Auburn.
