i think it's worth mentioning that we're to the point on the list that there's not going to be many candidates, if any at all to be honest, that don't have warts and issues.

and we do a really good job here of dissecting those warts and issues, always finding the reason(s) that guy won't work here.

but, i'm willing to concede right now that i'll just go ahead and agree with any wart brought up about a potential candidate, just to save the time.

what i think we might need to do, as a fan base, is look at some of these guys from the standpoint of:

"how could this guy succeed here? is there a path to success for him, and what might that look like?"

i think we're past the point of finding a unanimouns agreement on who the next coach should be. i also think we're past the point of getting a home run, big name....and we're most likley going wind up with a guy that is on many's 2nd or 3rd tier. so that being the case....it should just be assumed there's imperfections.

just a suggestion. :hi:

We can pretty much throw some big money at a few people and see if they bite like we did with Gundy or try to find someone that has great potential while weighing risk/reward.

Dave Dorean doesn't have that. Tee doesn't have any qualifications other than that he played here. They just don't have what we need right now.

Brohm is a risk with a buyout. Brohm has a 5 million dollar buyout right now. It does go down to 4 million on December 5th. Still a big investment off the top for someone that's not very proven because he took over solid foundations before this season. Gundy's buyout was only 3 million too, so it probably allowed us to offer a bit more money.

I think we could get others with equal risk for cheaper.

Lane is why we are where we are. He's also fired everywhere he stays more than a few years and would alienate a lot of the fanbase from day 1. Huge risk. But maybe some reward if he can stay out of NCAA trouble and recruit like he was initially, although his bust factor among recruits was massive here.

Morris is probably the least costly option with a decent chance of success due to great recruiting ties and a solid background. Similar resume to Gus Malzahn with more HC experience. But is also inexperienced at this level and still risky, perhaps moreso than Brohm. But not nearly as expensive.

I honestly was ready to punt the next 4 years after Sunday. If we're terrible we are and it's due to AD incompetence that requires more than a coach to fix. There has to be a lot of changes but maybe someone can win some football games in the meantime.

Agreed. Time to stop digging every bone out of a closet and just look more at coaching ability as it pertains to our programs strengths and weaknesses.

Obviously major character flaws should Be concerning (looking at you Schiano). But uh...yeah, slim pickings coming up folks.

I think it starts at the top with boosters hopefully beginning to alienate the Haslam's influence.

Then...

Get a different AD in place (or tell Currie to have his hands OFF), and then let boosters move in and offer Kiffin 5.5-6.5M + 2.5M for assistants. Make the contract for all involved look like D-Day war plans so no one can leave us hanging and ensure NCAA compliance. Put bonuses in for wins over UGA, UF, Bama / or winning the East.

Can I be the AD? Make Tennessee Great Again.

I agree.....but there are a few "warts" which couldn't work now because of what all has transpired......but most of those would not happen anyway.

Kiffin

Has been here before.....already knows what it is like....and already knows the bad stuff......as he left and saw and felt it. He has a good Offensive mind, and while his "mic mouth" is usually not a good thing........right now I certainly think it would help Tennessee. He has something to prove in the SEC, at Tennessee, and even to Bama (not saying it would happen, but we know he wants to badly). If he were willing (especially him) he would certainly be here for all the right reasons.......as anything could kill his career......even some bad seasons. He can recruit, he can put together a good staff, and I think at this point prob 80% of the fans would get behind him.

Norvell

Great offense, good at winning % at Memphis, has some power 5 exp, and he is real young. If he succeeds he could be here for a long time. Maybe not right away, but I could see a young, offensive minded coach being a good recruiter. If he were paired with a great DC with his offense in a couple of years he could do very well.

The prob is he may very well go to Ark.

Morris

He was a pretty good OC at Clemson, and while he doesnt have really any exp pryor to that he has been at SMU for 3 years now and finished with a winning record this year. With an amazing DC he would prob get Tennessee through a tough time and maybe have the program in an OK situation, when he leaves.

Brohm

Brohm was an OC at Louisville, KY and UAB all for a year, and did good. He was the head coach at Western Kentucky for 3 years and had 2 good years......they even finished 24th in the country one year.........and that is at WK. He could have some good offenses at Tennessee with the talent Tennessee brings in. Not sure how he recruits, but if Tennessee does well on the field, and scores a lot I could see good talent wanting to come. Brohm also got Purdue to 6-6 this year and they scored 31 or more 4 times, and they scored 28 and 29 once............at Purdue. His SEC path would have to include some big name assistants, and a great DC, but once he got his offense sorted (this may take a year or two.......but many of these coaches will anyway)....it could be pretty good paired with a great DC.

the bad is he has a big buyout would be 6 million

Sumlin

He knows what it takes to win in the SEC. He has a better record than any of the coached that got fired this year. He is a good recruiter, and is passionate. His offense works really well when he has the right talent. He knows what it takes at a big time program. I am sure he would love to get revenge and prove A&M wrong. He has done better in the West than the last three coaches Tennessee has had.

It looks like he is prob off the AZ ST

Martin

Martin runs a good offense......and has helped to develop some very good talent. Martin is ranked the #9 recruiter in the nation......and most above him are HC's. Martin knows Vol tradition, and knows what it is like here......as he is a Vol. Martin is young, and while not very experienced.......what he does have is at one of the most publicized and scrutinized programs not to mention it is a big time program. Martin also has some SEC coaching exp........and could rally the players, former players, and even fans (once he wins for fans). Martin knows the pressure at Tennessee.........heck he came in after Peyton.

Not sure he would risk his career by starting is HC career with the mess at Tennessee right now.

Miles

Miles has a tremendous coaching record and a great SEC record.......has won a NC, and has recruited some of the best talent. He knows what it takes to beat any team in the SEC. In the past he could flat out coach at times. With the right OC he could certainly stabilize Tennessee quickly.

his name isn't being floated anywhere.......prob for a reason......not sure he would come

Cutcliffe says no
Gundy says no
Patterson signed ext
Leach squashed rumors (but could go to Ark)
Campbell squashed rumors
Fisher will stay or go to A&M

I'm sure there are some other "lesser" names Tennessee could go after.

I could certainly be wrong........but I think they did that with Gundy because they thought he was the best chance to bite on the money............after Sunday they prob should have started the "money dump" on someone else quietly and gauge the results.

Not sure this will work again......it would have to be absolutely stupid money and Petersen is prob the only one you could even try that with because if the money involved vs the actual coach you could get.

However Tennessee is prob past that at this point......and almost certainly down to the "lesser" hires.

Think about this..........if Sunday never happened, this situation, while not great would look totally different. It looks like Gundy took this seriously and considered the options.........if you offer him first, and the media mess never happened.....he may have actually accepted.

At this point I'd wait until Sunday and make a good run at Frost. Worst case you hold Nebraska's feet to the fire and make them take a few million more out of their recruiting budget.

This makes too much sense. Do you think he would not listen to a 6M offer? I can't believe we are not calling his agent and setting up a meeting for Sunday! Why would we assume that he automatically goes to Nebraska? Every coach does not coach at their alma mater.

Les Miles: track record, championship history, knows about fan pressure, great recruiter, won't back down from a challenge, etc. Why not Les?

Why pay Kiffin 6MM??? He’d come for 2MM

Drumbeats in the distant. A warning or something else? It was hard to tell with the sound mingled with a crackling noise. An orange tint dominating evening sky. Sunset or the city aflame, which was it? Panic beset the casino, people fled the premises, but one stayed.

“One more go around,” he insisted.
Table Tilly looked at him. Her eyes wide with both fear of what was happening outside and Orange City Gambler’s seeming insanity. Then she ran out like everyone else.

A grinding rattle shook the building. Tables and chairs slid out of place. Roulette wheels sped across the floor. Slot machines toppled over. Poker chip clattered, bounced, and rolled in a crazy dance. Only then did Orange City Gambler also arise and flee. Out on the streets, strange vehicles in the sky, stranger noises all around, he fled desperately looking for his partner. He ran here and there. He ran everywhere. He offered his large winnings for information on where to find him. There were no takers and so he ran some more. A lady latched onto his arm and shouted at him above the din.

“I know who you‘re looking for; he left two days ago when you were too drunk to notice.”
“Where’d he go! Tell me!”
“He’s either in Memphis or Florida. I’m not sure which but I recall him mentioning both. I’d suggest you try Memphis. It’s a safer bet.”
Before Orange City Gambler could say a word, the lady jumped into a car and sped off.

Somewhere two men sat at a table, one enjoying a plate of dry barbeque. The other nibbling on a plate of some California-ish health stuff and with a seafood side of calamari.
“Whatcha think?” one said.
“Ain’t made up my mind yet.”
“Hear ya. I think I’m losing interest.”
The other guy nodded. “Me too.”

Orange City Gambler was far away. Confused and disheveled, he didn’t know what to think or say. The orange tint of the sky was turning red. The crackling noise was growing louder. The ground continued to shake and rumble. “I got to get out of here,” he muttered. He seemed to have no idea how to do that.

There's absolutely no reason to panic and rush into signing a low level coach. Currie needs to continue to send out feelers, zero in on the next top choice and let this weekend play out. Hopefully the massive contract attracts a few more suitors. No advantage to getting a coach this week versus next week. New coach still would have 2-3 weeks to salvage the recruiting class.

i agree. i think Miles is a perfect guy for us now, situationally speaking. and he wants the job supposedly. and i got a sneaky suspicion it wouldn't cost $6/$7M/year to get him.

i'd hire les asap. and i'd make call to Tee martin and see if $2 or $3m/year would get him on staff as a HCIW?

if you could do that, you fix the present and preserve the future....easier said than done, obviously. but if you're willing to do what we did yesterday........

you could spend that money a lot more wisely on a plan like this now.
