at odds with Debord

the problem with this is it wastes a down. Then we are 2nd and 11 and that happened several times yesterday. I can't believe how many times Dobbs was told to tuck it and run up the middle.

The got a first down on the next play. It was the next two sacks that killed them

At the end of the game, we had scored two TDs, and Bama scored two TDs.

We looked as good as Bama except for that last drive.

They just capitalized on the kicking game and we're able to make that final play that we werent.

We haven't lost ANY game this year by more than a single touchdown, and that came in over time.

The process has created progress.

I had ZERO issues with coaching/play-calling all day. It was a hard-fought game and we just came up a little short. Unlike the other losses, there really aren't any plays that I can point to that "lost" us the game (outside of the missed field goals of course).

I did not like that we were not going to try to score before half if Hurd had not got that big run. If we had, we probably have better field goal range or a TD.

I also agree with op that running up middle when limited amount of time left was silly. Other than that 1 time, running up middle had not worked.

I thought it waste a huge waste of a play, when you are down to one drive to win the game, and you call a play right into the teeth of their strength....run defense? Off tackle, stretch play, some kind of misdirection? Absolutely. But I, too, was asking WTH was that? Probably should have gone max protect on that drive....knowing that you have 2 true freshmen all alone on an island, in do or die time. It was just like our OT victory against USCjr. The DL suddenly played out of their minds.

If Butch had gotten aggressive and tried to throw downfield to score from our 25 and Dobbs throws an int, we fumble, or hurry and punt the ball back with a minute left -- all to let them score and take the lead all you boo birds would be out in force. He made the right call -- Hurds run got us in scoring position but we could not take advantage (a fake may have been the better call -- did not notice if Bama was in "safe" or not after the time out)

The same idiotic throw danger to the wind mentality is what cost us the game against Notre Dame several years ago as well losing our QB Ainge for the season. Sometimes caution is the right play especially against a defense like Bama has.

Obviously it wasn't, we needed more points. The play it safe way has cost us 2-3 games this year vs the one time at band camp you speak of. Playing your offense with 2 to go and turning it over is no worse than any other drive that ends that way. Play to win the damn game not to stay close! Dumb decision and butch still have not learned from Fl or Ok.

Exactly, when out talented, against a better coach in a game everyone expects you to get beat in you have to throw caution to the wind and keep pouring on steam!

Would've called a screen pass instead of run when Bama stacked the box on the last drive. They worked great the first couple of drives.

Positive criticism can be a positive if taken in the right way...like designed plays for Josh to roll out and exploit the edges with run or pass...see...:)

GO VOLS!

Apparently UT does not have any plays designed for Dobbs to roll out although he did complete a very pretty TD to Malone while running right versus Okla. I don't get it and fault the staff for this lack. A lot of posters on this site mention it because dobbs would likely fare a lot better against these heavy-laden SEC defensive lines we play against.

Eh, we caught Bama off Hurd with a run at the end of the first half and we had plenty of time. I don't fault them for trying to see if we could steal an easy 10-15 chunk or set up a second and short on a zone read play.

I do wish we'd have moved the pocket a time or two to end that drive though or tried one of those quick passes to Kamara that was giving them fits all day.

The Stewart fella made a circus catch. Seems to happen to us a lot for some reason. Just not our time yet. Not sure i can place blame on that one. Cam Sutton.. For all the hype he's gotten about being a shut down corner, he's given up several big catches. Ridley, a freshman out jumping him for the ball late in that game comes to mind. Bama doesn't have scrubs for receivers, but our best corner is getting beat repeatedly when it matters.

Cam made plays, knocked passes away and was in position. He should not be getting any grief.

Feel free to send your resume to the AD tomorrow morning. Make sure you type COACH in big ol' letters under position wanted. Better yet, use a crayon.

Spot-on response. We have so many self-styled experts on VN, causing my IGNORE list to grow to over 100. :hi:

Calling run up the middle with 2:00 minutes left on the clock and Bama stacking the box.
Not good.
I know our kicking and corner backs lost us the game but why run up the middle with time running out.
We actually had one more chance at a win.

A surprising high % of two minute drives start with running plays up the middle because the offense wants to make a point to the defense that they must cover more than just the sideline. Nearly every single 2min Cut ever called started with a run up the middle.

Now the outcome was the problem the play is supposed to pop for some yards.

Well a run up the middle before halftime got us a 40 yard gain. Hurd always gives us a chance.

Butch implied in earlier games this season that he plays the averages. Well with 80 yards to go, I would think that our "average chances" of gaining big yards up the middle against one of the best D-lines in the country is quite small. Even my wife who knows nothing about football said "That was stupid". If you have the time on the clock for possibly a few more plays, why waste one on a play that has such a low percentage of success that doesn't even stop the clock.

Another low percentage call was sending in Medley at the end of first half (with no time on the clock) to attempt a very long field goal. What's the chances of that working. We have at least 4 legitimate receivers that are 6-3 or taller. Seems to me a toss-up pass to the end zone has at least a 50-50 chance.

To me, when you're playing a top team and you're the underdog, you've got to take some chances.

Not a waste of down if he breaks through for 35 yards. It's hindsight. Jalen broke one similar in the first half. Not the game to nitpick. It was well coached and played.

I am not a Debord fan but this call was to try and give Bama something to worry about instead of pinning their ears back.

I had a problem with that call at 2:00 too. I can see trying one there to catch Bama in a full pass rush though. What bothered me was when it happened repeatedly on a drive in the 2nd Q to lay down before the half. Hurd (at Bama's surprise) busted the 3rd down one and got big yards. Then we tried it again twice in the 3rd Q on a drive, to expected results.

I'm not against scissor plays up the middle, trap, dive, or QB draws etc. But, this exact situation killed us in the 3rd / 4th Qs against OU and UF. Here is my problem. Running up the middle pits our #1 weakness vs their #1 strength. Bama's front 7 is rediculously good and our OL is not even mid pack SEC. This is the #1 place to scheme around IMO. Running up the gut should be nothing more than to keep their D honest over the course of that game. 2-4 times maximum! Not a staple of the game plan.

When you have a weakness, you hide it. When they have a strength(Bama has a lot of those on D), you avoid it! This is what blew my mind in the OU game in 2nd, 3rd, 4th Q. When that front 7 is strong, and your OL can't push anything, then you better find yards with misdirection and speed. That we at least have a chance of.

UF, OU, and UA are stacked in the trenches. We are soft. Stay the heck outta there IMO.
