'26 ASU Transfer QB Sam Leavitt (LSU)

Love how all the coaches in here know the plan for GMac and that it was a mistake to NOT burn his redshirt year.

There was no reason to put him in for trash time and either burn his redshirt or risk any kind of injury. You learn nothing playing him for a drive here or there in garbage time against backups.

Merklinger was the backup for a reason and the coaches played it the way they wanted. CJH is making 9m a year and played the position to be questioned by message board experts, it’s hilarious.

If you’re worried about a guy getting injured in 4 meaningless games a full 10 months before next season, you’re soft.

If Heupel winds up rolling with Mac next year, he will have zero excuse if he isn’t ready or any of this “he’s only making his first start this year” crap. He had more than enough time and weeks of practice and games against trash teams to get Mac a lot of live reps and game film.

If you truly think Mac was an injury risk against the likes of New Mexico State, you shouldn’t be playing at all.

Redshirts don’t mean anything any more. Guy can go pro after three years whether he redshirts or not, and I doubt anyone sticks around five years anyway.

I actually think we are going to see these payouts get bigger for a bit until we get some form of cap or CBA.

With that said, I think we will see guys come back for another year for right price if the draft QB needy teams aren’t great. Like this year is death for Mendoza Moore and Simpson types. Jets and Raiders lol

Yea because using your logic, getting reps against NM State backups will have him ready for 2026. Thanks coach!

I saw posters wondering why he didn’t play in during the pretty meaningless bowl game, where they had already sacked Joey 4 times and hit much more. Why on earth you’d want to put your ,current 1A in a few weeks for spring practice, in that game made no sense to me. Just so we could watch him play to “see what he’s got”, or For 20 snaps like those are going to matter in 9 months with a different team?

You may not learn anything, but the player learns a lot. . .

1. Why are you on here if you’re so upset at people voicing their opinion on Tennessee athletics? It’s literally the whole point of this board’s existence. It would be incredibly boring if we all just agreed all the time.

2. You absolutely can find out things in garbage time. Not a ton, but you’d find out if he knows how to protect himself in the pocket and how well he sees the field against a defense he hasn’t practiced against. If GMac plays poorly or if a transfer is brought in over him the likelihood of GMac transferring after the season goes up and whether or not he redshirts is also then a moot point.

3. How much did Brian Kelly get paid last year? Billy Napier? Head Coaches have significantly more ball knowledge than us, but they also have their own shortcomings and biases that cause them to make the wrong call all the time, regardless of their paycheck. I like Heupel and appreciate how well he’s turned things around here, but he’s not perfect either.

I agree with that sentiment it coaches still do it. Sometimes players/parents request it. Pretty obvious the intention was to RS GMac last year

Aguilar barely averaged 200 yards against NM State and Florida in a 3 weeks time span. Spare me the “he’d play vs backups nonsense”

QB didn’t matter who was starting in those games.
