Mark Elder is expected to coach in the bowl game, and also as noted earlier he --- and any other coach --- must work the postseason contest in order to receive the bonus. For Elder, that's approximately $20,000. It is unclear what the buyout status of Elder's contract will be as he departs Tennessee for the head coaching job at Eastern Kentucky. He was under contract only through Feb. 28, 2016, so if he faces a prorated buyout it would be approximately $40,000.

Sources both here and in Kentucky continue to indicate that both Greg Meyer and Chase Gibson are expected to join Elder's inaugural staff at EKU. Meyer has been the special teams quality control while Gibson is a defensive quality control guy with roots in Eastern Kentucky.

It remains a bit more unclear on both Willie Martinez and Zach Azzanni, though both would owe substantial buyout payments if they leave for other jobs. Multiple sources told VolQuest.com this week, including as late as Thursday, that Miami and coach Mark Richt had definite interest in Martinez. The two are close friends, and Richt has expressed regret at having to dismiss Martinez several years ago at Georgia. Richt, we're told, has focused on relentless recruiting and not had much in the way of staff movement this week in Coral Gables. He's expected to ramp up his staff assembly with the onset of the dead period and then close out immediately after the bowl games.

For Azzanni, there's no disputing the friendship with new Maryland coach D.J. Durkin but we had some folks this week indicate to us that Durkin definitely wants a balance of young, up-and-coming coaches as well as seasoned veterans on his staff. Could even utilize co-offensive coordinators. Azzanni has not responded to inquiries about the matter, but multiple sources told multiple Volquest staff members an interview for Azzanni could be imminent. Durkin has settled his defensive staff this week.

Don Mahoney is a coach whose stock improved this season on the Vols' staff and who has meshed very well with new offensive coordinator Mike DeBord. DeBord's ability to coach up front, as well as tight ends, shouldn't be overlooked; nor should the fact that Nick Sheridan instantly was ready to hit the recruiting trail for the Vols on the day Elder was introduced as EKU's new head coach.

sheridan hit the recruiting trail? well that answers the question about who the qb coach is. a graduate assistant can recruit, but are not allowed to travel to do so.

Not true

When a fulltime coach gets another job a GA can fill in as a temporary replacement per NCAA rules.

That part should tell us nothing in terms of if Sheridan is getting the job or now.

Now the way I read the Vq article it seemed they might be giving the old wink wink hush hush hint about it but by rule it means nothing

But what? If you a e going to insinuate something go ahead and spit it out...quit hiding behind "but"

Sheridan doesn't inspire confidence. He hasn't exactly helped Dobbs accuracy, and his recruiting ability is a big unknown. Most would prefer a more established coach.

I'll take a good coach over a great coach as long as the coach is a GREAT recruiter.

We absolutely MUST stay a great recruiting program if we're going to WIN against the top teams in the country and get to the playoffs and WIN there too!

Top recruiting is the lifeblood of college football and that's just the way it is.

I would pay the guy from BGSU what he wanted for QB Coach and Passing (throw?) Game Coordinator.

he went on the road last year when Bajakian left. All that is required is for him to pass a test (which he had done since he was a full time coach at USF). He may have had to retake it since he became a GA.

Anyone within the athletic department can be designated to go on the road and recruit when a coaching staff member departs the staff. Just necessary to pass NCAA test to recruit.

David Blackburn did it several times during his time at Tennessee.

Judy Jackson did it when she worked for Coach Fulmer and he had staff members leave.

he might end up as the QB coach but just because he is out recruiting doesn't mean it happens.

Doug Mathews just said on 104.5 the Zone in Nashville that he would be "very surprised" if Sheridan wasn't named QB coach.

Nicely done OP. Any thoughts on who butch it looking at for replacement coaches? Would love to see some upgrades, although it will be hard to duplicate our special teams this year

That will the hints Vq was seemingly giving I would say it's a done deal

Of course nothing is a done deal until it's finalized and announced. But Mathews is as tied in to the staff and administration as anybody. We'll see.

Did you ever consider all of Dobbs accuracy issues aren't 'coachable'?

Kinda like throwing darts.. Some people are just naturally good at it. While others, no matter how much they practice, never get that good at it..

:banghead2:I hope Butch reads all the posts on this sight. If he would, he would win a N.C. The poster advice on VN is sound and 100% correct. We watch games on Saturdays and see it all. We know it all too. If you don't believe us, just ask. Sheridan has to go Butch. Never met the guy, never coached in my life, never played college football, but I know he needs to go!:rtfm::compute:

true, triple 20, 3 in a row here, but we've got to try something dont we? I think, just guessing here, that the coaches have beaten the turnover fear into dobbs so relentlessly that he's too cautious sometimes, he double hitches occasionally and just seems to look for the checkdown, that may be part of it too

Dobbs is inconsistent. He is accurate when he does as he's coached to do.

On the other, it depends on what happens with others on the staff. I don't know that Sheridan would be a "bargain basement" hire but if the Vols end up needing to replace Martinez, Z, or both then having the cash to get top-notch coaches in those positions from the outside might be more important.

Frankly, I think there are better coaches out there- particularly for WR. But both Z and Martinez are strong recruiters. To upgrade coaching ability while still getting a good recruiter... will cost $$$.
