Yeah, let's not get crazy with the Tolkien comparisons. They might compare in what has been captured in video games/movies, but Tolkien literally wrote the book(s) on universe creation.
Witcher is based on a robust short story/novel world by an author who is building variations on top of Tolkien’s givens like most fantasy fiction. Then CDPR came in and added content as well. That is definitely a gigantic fantasy world.
With Elder Scrolls I feel like it is as large a universe as is possible in a game with 25 years of development by a hoard of content creators.
Not arguing quality of the fantasy writing of course. Tolkien wins that hands down. And his world is still as beautifully realized as any I’ve encountered even with the very black and white morality which a series like Witcher rejects.
