You're opinion always helps. Nice to see you back around.

I thought about you this past week Volly.

I thought I had lost a favorite book. After looking everywhere (almost), I went to Barnes and Noble and bought another one. Later that night I found the "lost" one.

Why I thought of you I have no idea, but I thought it would be cool to send you the new one. That was until my next thought was how creepy it would be for me to ask for your address. So, I gave the new one to a neighbor that will probably never open it.

Too late for "long story short"? It's the newest edition (5th 2013) of The Food Lovers Companion. I have the 3rd (2001) and the 4th (2007) and each are better than the previous.

If you don't have one or have never heard of it, I recommend it. Anyone with interest in food should have it. B&N $15. I saw them on Amazon for as little a $3 but I didn't want to wait. I use mine every day!

I will definitely look for it next time I'm at the mall! I told a friend the other day how much

I wish I had the internet when I started cooking. I knew how to do what my mom and grandmother did, cook the dishes they did, and that's about it. I had cook books of course, but I didn't really put any effort into "learning how to cook". All I did was follow recipes and cook food. You know what I mean? There is so much more to it than that. I'm glad I finally started to attempt some things I never thought I could do.

What I really wish I had a better understanding of is knowing how to combine flavors. Which ingredient you can add to elevate something else. So much to know!

Some have the God given ability which makes it easier, but it's not easy...period. However, if you have a passion for learning it, it can be fun and exiting. As with anything else I guess.

Funny you were the one to reply first.

I didn't make those.

I was reading a book about Grant Achatz of Alinea in Chicago (did you ever go there?). A comment was made about Redneck Turtle Burgers and I had to google it. I thought it was funny. I would guess they were placed on something to block the flames/heat from the body allowing the edges of the dogs to char.

Edible Green apple balloons and string, filled with helium so you talk funny while eating them.

Alinea.

no, didn't try it

but those look good, kids would love them

That was my thought, about the kids loving them.

And, how could you go wrong with hamburger, cheese, hot dogs and bacon.

Do dogs go to Heaven?
By Rev. Dale Turner

Looking back across the years I see how important dogs have been in my life. I had been an ordained minister only a few weeks when I received a call from an 8 year old boy. His dog had been killed by a car. "Mr. Turner", the lad sobbed, " do you do funerals for dogs"?

I didn't quite know how to respond, but I recalled the Scriptures' affirmation of God's knowing when even sparrow falls. I replied, "why not"? I conducted a little ceremony for the boy's pet. He was very pleased and then asked, "Is my dog going to heaven"? I wasn't prepared for that question, but my love for animals got me through it.

Several years later I had my own personal experience that provided the answer I had never been sure of.

Our wonderful dachshund, Gretta died and we were eager to bring another dog into our home. We went to the pound to get the dachshund whose photo had appeared in the paper. By the time we arrived, he had been claimed. Another puppy, sensing our mission, poked her nose through the fence. the look in her eyes seemed to say "Please pick me." We did. And named her Pick.

After 14 years, Pick became very sick and there was nothing to be done except put her out of her misery. With a heavy heart I drove her to the Vet's who did what had to be done. I then went back to study and wept for hours.

A few days later, a parishioner who knew of my grief sent me this poem. It healed my sorrow. Perhaps it will help others. I'd like to share it:

I explained to St. Peter,
I'd rather stay here,
Outside the pearly gate.
I won't be a nuisance,
I won't even bark,
I'll be very patient and wait.
I'll be here, chewing on a celestial bone, No matter how long you may be.
I'd miss you so much, if I went in alone,
It wouldn't be heaven for me.
