I "core" it with the palm of my hand.
For shredding or leaf for sammiches, I cut in half.....
For salads I cut in half then in one inch squares.
Either way goes in an ice bath with a pinch of salt. The salt will kill any critters that might still be lurking.
Then drain in a colander.
Interesting! Never heard the salt idea before. Growing up all we ever did was pull off the ouside leaves. But that's just not a safe thing to do anymore.
I core mine by smashing the core on the counter, then it just falls out. I remove the first couple layers, then tear it in half and rinse as good as I can. Then lay torn side down on paper towels to drain. Use what I need, then put a fresh paper towel around it and into a ziplock bag. Salad spinners do an awesome of getting chopped lettuce dry.
You use the counter I use my palm (insert palm joke here).
I didn't go in to enough detail I guess, obviously I throw the first layer or two away before I do anything.
Salad spinners are much too "uppity" for me....haha.
A little fresh lemon juice on the lettuce after you put it in the zip lock will keep it fresh longer and slow the wilting process down.
