I can't help but wonder what UT could have done this year with a real half court offense. When I see Butler, Pitt, etc. running clear cut half court sets and offenses and then compare it to what we do it is a polar opposite. Give me a coach that teaches fundamental basketball and defense and I will be happy.

The offense is Pearl's weakness as a coach.

My son and i were watching Duke MI game and my son just said "how come those guys are always moving and hustling and our guys don't?" from the mouths of babes. :banghead2:

My mother said the exact same thing. The fact that a child and mother both notice that, speaks volumes.

just think if shelby and craft would have stayed committed to UT! If believe they left because they new what was getting ready to happen

It doesn't take Crafts and Selbys to win in cbb nowadays.

Our staff has seemed content to shoot for the stars with no back-up plans outside of DI rejects and Juco projects. Which wouldn't be THAT big of a problem if it wasn't for the fact the staff is fundamentals retarded.

Great posts folks. They mirror everything I saw on the court this past season. We got bailed out by a couple of key players that knew how to create offense each season when it came to the half court. Not so this year. Pearl has never had a real half court offense and doesn't understand that you cannot over-sub when you have to play one. Over-subbing destroys the timing and flow.

So far, it has been mentioned that we have no 3 point shooters, poor PG play and a lack of post scoring. How exactly can a coach run a coherent offense with those deficiencies?

Which announcer was it earlier this year that said we were standing around so much that he honestly couldn't tell whether the other team was playing a man to man or zone?

Cant win with JUST athletes. You have to incorporate some shooters in there. If Pearl or Pastner would do this their offenses would be scary...

You can do that just by emphasizing tempo and transition offense without being able to coach a lick of half-court offense.

Bruce is better with a tempo and transition offense than a half-court offense. Bottom line - he's had very successful offensive teams.

Only if you're willing to look at a stat like points per game in some disembodied, contextless state. In terms of something like, "knows how to get a bucket against a good team when they really need one" -- which I would consider something basic that a "successful offensive team" would know how to do -- then no, his offensive teams haven't been that good.

The debacle on Friday began when Michigan went to a zone and Pearl's team, as is typical for Pearl's teams, had no idea what to do to score. I would think that being able to attack a zone defense would be a fundamental component of any "successful" offensive team, regardless of what their per-game stats look like .

This. And how the fact that they weren't ready for the 1-3-1 is just inexcusable. It's not like it was a surprise that they hit us with it.
