As bad as we are...

What if there were no fixed opponents in the west side of SEC, which there should not be, maybe this year we rotated into Arkansas instead of Bama. Our record could stand a chance to be a little better, plus you would not be beat up by Bama. Just saying scheduling does help although I hate these scrub games that UT plays.
Hel-! we would still lose this year.

The hard pill to swallow is that next year we should be better, by all accounts. However, so will Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Bama.................................................
Most of them could be a little better. We MUST, and hopefully will a a LOT better.

Current CFP Rankings

#1 Alabama
#5 Georgia (and they would crush ND and Michigan)
#9 WVU
#11 Kentucky
#15 Florida
#24 Auburn

Not many programs anywhere would have a winning record against this schedule. ND would be lucky to be 500 against this. And taking a team that was 0-8 with very low talent and depth, Pruitt is doing a great job. If he gets to 6-6, it will be a much better job then Saban in his first year.

I agree it’s tough to rebuild in the SEC, but this team right now would have a hard time in any of the Power 5 conferences right now. I can’t objectively say that we would be >.500 in the ACC, PAC12, Big Ten, Big 12 in conference games.

We would be the
2-3 best team in the ACC
4th in PAC12
5th in Big10
and 5th in BIG12

The ACC is probably, no definitely, the easiest Conference in the Power5s, the next best team is not good at all!
Clemson is a one horse race even worse than Alabama in the SEC!

I guess it gives people something to talk about that just want to talk sports. It affects the things that it affects. Everybody who has a vote has to consider that (there are a lot of such people). In my lifetime, UT has been always notable for its difficult schedule. Some people think that is really important to team development, but I don't. Just my opinion. I am definitely no analyst of football.

I wasn't being sarcastic, fwiw. Its always interesting to see some arguing how bad we suck, and others arguing how good we "could" be IF we were in a different conference.

On a different note, my favorite car ever was my first car at age 15, a 1973 Firebird Esprit.

Alabama-Tennessee game will be on the schedule forever like it or not. Alabama has had a great runnthe last ten years, but everything runs in cycles. Saban will eventually retire, and Alabama will go back to being mere mortals.

This is kinda my point. We KNOW we’re not as good as we want to be. We KNOW we’re not as good as the teams we lost to. And, we KNOW that we want to be back on top in the SEC and nowhere else.

The thought was only that because of the competition we have played, we don’t really know how good/bad we are in comparison to teams outside the SEC.

Favorite car was my ‘92 full size Bronco.

This thread as a whole is nutzo. We are all over the place as a fanbase right now. IMO the Auburn win was a sign of progress, SC was always going to be tough given placement and the Charlotte game was hard to get up for. I think we win two of the final three and land in a bowl. We aren't great but are getting better. PS Smith's condition and Kennedy's injury have really, really hurt.

Georgia's roster has the highest percentage of freshman and sophomores in the conference. They are only losing a handful of starters on both sides of the ball. Fromm, Swift, and Holyfield will all be back, they are going to be a lot better unfortunately. As to Florida it all depends on whether Florida can find or develop a QB, because they'll have enough of everything else coming back to be better. Kentucky is losing a lot of people, not sure about USCe. Bama, well of course they'll be insane, Tua can't go pro until after next year.

Kentucky will likely not be better next year. It's my understanding that they have 15 starters who are seniors. There is also nothing definitive that states South Carolina will be better next year. In fact, I would speculate that the only team of the ones you mention above that should be better is Georgia. This year has been a reloading one for them with several key players drafted out from their NC game run last year.

What I mean by a little better is that if you are at the top of the league and/or near the top in the country, getting better by much would be really hard. (Bama does not count in my thought process, I don't know how the understand their place in anything). We however, must get a lot better than we are to even be in the conversation.

Well...

We know are not better than Clemson.
You would have a hard time convincing anyone we are better than....Boston College, Syracuse, Miama, Virginia, Virginia Tech.
Not sure we would be better than GT or Duke and maybe even NC State...so no, we wouldnt ve 2-3 team in the ACC.

Yep, and the same exact players on both teams would guarantee the same results. Wouldn't even need to play the game.
How did we come to the conclusion that they would crush them? When a claim like that is make the only half way logical thing to do is look at the last result.
But again thats the problem with debating people that make claim that cant be proven wrong.

Without our schedule we would be better. Just look at the current AP.

WV-#7
Bama- #1
UGA- #5
UF- #19
AU- was top 25 when we played them
UK- #12

Thats 3 top 10 teams and 2 of the most explosive offenses in the nation. Take those and replace them with weaker opponents and we would absolutely have a better record.

If they had beaten Charlotte 42-3 and scored more than one offensive TD I would agree.

Regardless of the conference, you have to step on the field believing you can win, and unfortunately this team simply does not have that mentality. We have seemed intimidated at the start of every game this year, especially SEC games. This helps explain why our offense is 118th in the nation in 1st quarter scoring, and our defense is 106th in the nation in 1st quarter points allowed.
