Article on Matt Simms

One of the things I noticed while watching his film is that tends to throw slightly behind the wr, I'm hoping that it is just a timing issue and that with time with his wr that he get from the back shoulder to the front shoulder. I saw this with Crompton before he started his dramatic turnaround. I hope he is great, we'll have to see.

I think you gotta take into consideration that it was from the first four games of the season, like you said Cromp Daddy didn't turn it around till the 2nd half of the Auburn game IMO. Plus this was his first game action with new teammates at his JC. The praise he is getting hopefully means he has put in the time and effort needed to develop into a good SEC QB.

I wasn't trying to be negative just stating what I noticed. Like you mentioned it was early in the year and I hope he has improved. It was nice to see good news from him and hope to see more as the year progresses, though I'm in the Bray camp only because I see him as the future QB1.

I have a lot of confidence in Simms. I hope he can be our QB ,and I'll be rooting for him. I don't want to see us pull a QB change in mid-season. I love Bray too ,but whoever wins the starting job needs our full support. I would hate to see 08 happen all over again. I remember specifically Fulmer raving about Crompton in the summer of 08 of how he was zipping passes like a pro QB, and we all remember how that turned out.

I am pulling for Simms, if only because I thought people overanalyzed his spring game. Hell, Crompton outperformed Ainge in the Spring before Ainge's Jr. year...

QB Simms creating buzz

For the first time, says Austin Ward of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, there is a buzz around juco transfer QB Matt Simms, the No. 1 signal caller heading into fall camp, that hasn't existed since Simms arrived on campus in January.

What's behind the buzz? Simms' showing at the Manning Passing Academy, where he dazzled observers (including ESPN's Chris Mortensen) with his tight spirals and his accuracy in a skills competition.

If there was any question before, there shouldn't be any longer that Simms has the physical gifts to be a BCS conference QB. "When we evaluate quarterbacks, one of the criteria I use is what I call his 'ballistics,'" coach Derek Dooley said. "Imagine a bullet coming out of a gun. That's phenomenal ballistics, the physics of the spin and when it fires how tight the spiral is, how wound up the ball is. Matt does spin it well."

Ward cautions: "Obviously there's more to playing the position than just natural talent."

Now it's up to Simms to show that he can play the position better than he did during spring practice, when he emerged as the starter by default. Simms says that he is more comfortable with the offense and his teammates now than he was before, and he expects to perform better during fall camp as a result.

"I've got a better grasp of what's going on," he said. "You can ask all the coaches and all the players, I've definitely made a huge leap this summer, and that was my goal just to become more accurate with the football, better decision-making and to be quick but not to hurry."

Anything is better than Crompton... I have faith in Simms, and Bray. And next year Worley!! Woooo!!

You really need to remember that after the Ohio game last year JC turned into the QB we thought he could be. No one helped Crompton last year. Our WRs dropped more balls than they caught, our O-Line was nightmarish(IM AWARE they gave up a record low sacks but could it have also been due to the QB's awareness?), and we only had 1 RB for the majority of the season that could take the pressure of him. Was JC everything I hoped for? Hell NO but I am appreciative of the heart he showed and the games he came through and helped win us last season.

QB play could be blamed for 2 losses last year (UCLA and Florida). The other losses (Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Virginia Tech) were a combination of everything else outside of Crompton (defense, kicker, receivers). I wish we had him another year since he found his stride and it will likely take a few games for Simms to find his groove if he is capable of it.

I really like this quote!

Man, I cannot wait until FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!!! Little articles like this get me all fired up! A lot better than hearing about another arrest.

GO VOLS! May the best QB be on the field, and if it's Simms, may he get the respect and patience that we have give some great QBs in the past!

i really hope that Simms has stepped up his game this summer. im excited to see how he does in fall practice. if he really grabs ahold of the offense, he might really do some damage. he has been reputed to be well respected in the locker room, since he arrived at UT. that is an attribute that Bray can watch and learn from.

I think the best case scenario for all parties (Simms, Bray, Nance, et al) would be for Simms to win the job running away this fall. That would allow Bray to enter the SEC the way he should; by learning the offense and speed of the game from the sidelines for the first two seasons then leading HIS team his junior and senior years.

It also would allow Worley or ______ to redshirt and learn the SEC the optimal way, as well.

I remember win LSU was preparing to play us when C. Clausen was our QB. Little Ricky had to try and be his big bro. in LSU's practices. Rick was quoted as saying, "it's very hard because I can't run that slow, or throw the ball that wobbly. The moral of the story is a tight spiral doesn't make a quarterback.

It is nice to finally read something positive about the Vols. I really enjoyed Dooley's word selection when describing Matt's passing ability.Spoken like a former lawyer, I mean that in a good way. A gift to gab I suppose.
