I'll be fine with a young talent who's moving up the charts..

I talked to one head coach yesterday who pointed out that, in his mind, Tennessee is one of the toughest jobs in all of college football. It’s because the expectation is that Tennessee will be on par with Alabama, Florida, and Georgia on a yearly basis without some of the built-in advantages that those programs have, especially in recruiting. When Tennessee had it going in the 1990s, Fulmer and his staff were able to dip down into Georgia and Alabama for great players. Now Richt and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, a former Tennessee assistant, have put up a wall around Georgia. Saban is doing the same thing at Alabama.

As usual, Barnhart is wrong. I don't think most Tennessee fans expect us to start going 10-2 every year and dominating the SEC like we did in the 90s. The league is different now; that's not going to happen again. We expect to compete, not dominate.

Unfortunately Barnhart is good at one thing, and that's reflecting the conventional wisdom. If Barnhart says that coaches think our expectations are unreasonable, they probably do.

1. We could get a Richt or Meyer, but the next coach might be the next Zook or DuBose.

2. I'm sick of the UT has to recruit national crap. UT has done forever and had sustained success. Yes the next coach has to be a recruiter, but that is just a given.

3. Michigan has to recruit nationally and so does Nebraska and Notre Dame.
UT has just as much to sell if not more than any of those programs.

Good article but what kills me is Tony and Chris and all these guys who've been around the SEC for years should know better than to write about recruiting and TN.

We all know TN has to recruit nationally...they've always done so with dipping into GA, FL, LA and other southern states to get talent. Nothing has changed recruiting wise and nothing will. UGA has always had exceptional talent and the best that state had to offer...just ask GA Tech.

Serioulsy what has changed to make them think this is some kind of deterent to coaching here. Where are our 2 best players from? GA and OK. If these guys are gonna write something at least give us the fans the credit for having a brain when it comes to recruiting...hell we're the ones who keep the recruiting services in business. We know whats going on.

and where does he get that we expect to dominate like we did in the 90s. Florida dominated and we cleaned up every time they left off.

We expect to be competitive with those programs and to avoid year in and year out embarrassments at their hands.

By the logic of these "no recruiting base" clowns, Notre Dame and OU should never be able to field competitive teams.

I understand the need for national recruiting is a problem but it's been that way forever at UT.

Yes but during Nebraska's hay day, they ran a system that did not require them to have big time recruits...If You look back over time Nebraska never really was in the top 10 or 20 nationally recruiting...They ran the option and that didn't require big time players like in a pro style offense...Good example, look at Air Force...Since Nebraska has gotten away from the option style of offense, Look at where they are now...Pretty scary

This argument is getting old. every program outside of Florida, Texas and California have to recruit nationally if they want their team to be competitive.

That's true, Nebraska I would imagine is tough place to recruit to.

What are those builot-in advantages he refers to? With a limited number of schollys at each school, no state university can build a complete wall around a state if talent is abundant.

Barnhart as per usual an idiot. the same guy who still believes M.Stafford is the best QB in the nation and who cares C.U.M. "Urban Cryer" in nearly all his articles, guy is ruined beyond belief

My expectations as a fan are realistic. I know how it works and how it should work. Every school should have an opportunity to win a championship every four years. Take a solid freshman class, build on it and fill the holes, and win a SECC and maybe a NC their junior and senior years. If you're good enough, you can do it on a less-than-4 year cycle.

UT has did that somewhat. The only difference is that when UF and LSU are built, they win SECC and NC. UT builds up to the SECCG but loses. We've gotten real close, but we can't get over the hump.

Tony Barnhart---how does he make a living with these idiotic columns? He's a UGA suckup and anything outside of GA he loves to trash.

Apparently the AJC hasnt renewed his contract and his title as "Mr. College football" will now be listed on his resume as previous titles

the guy said UGA was going to win it all in August, nuff said

the guy that comes in here will have to have some serious gonads with matching charisma. i can think of only two that fit that bill that can be had...

face it, hamilton is in such a position that cannot afford to hit a triple!!!

the game passed fulmer by; if we're not careful and be prudent with our pick for head coach it will pass us as a ball team...

that settles it. we have to start putting steroids and special chemicals into the tennessee water. let's build linebackers, full backs, and safeties in nashville. big linemen in east tennessee. and skill positions out in west tn.
