Article:Ainge Hopeful About Draft

I have always liked EA and believe that his physical traits are more than qualified for an NFL QB. He's got size, an arm, intelligence, and has had good coaching.

On the flip side, my concern with him has always been his head. My gut tells me he does exactly as he is told which is not necessarily the best. This may sound contradictory, but hear me out. For example, Cutcliffe believed in the quick release and short pass so Ainge stuck to this religiously without putting it in context of the game or play. I think there is a fine line between being the QB that follows the coaches orders and being the QB that just makes plays/improvises, etc (think Favre). Ainge could use a little of this to fulfill his potential -- if he gets a coach to instill this or the faith in himself to trust his own ability, then yes, he will be a nice surprise for a team.

If he continues to play football in definite terms ("Don't get sacked", "quick passes only") then his career will be as predicted -- equivalent to a second day draft pick and a 2nd team QB at best.

“Honestly, I’m excited about it. I’m excited to be sitting here talking to you. These so-called problems we’re talking about — they’re not really problems. We’re sitting here talking about me playing in the NFL. I’m blessed, man.”

Good statement. I wish him well.

I think he will probably go somewhere in the 3rd round. However if he does not get drafted after Casey Clausen not getting drafted, that might keep us from getting another highly recruited QB. If they think they can't go to the NFL by coming to UT as a QB, then they won't come. Again, I do think he gets drafted though. Depending on where he ends up, I think he could do very well.

QBs haven't exactly been hot-ticket items in the draft thus far.

Nice words from Erik. Best of luck to him.

Oh, and to the comment on being a backup QB in the NFL: gravy train, baby.

He'd be a nice pickup by the Panthers. They've had their share of QB issues and I don't see that the Panthers have a plan beyond Delhomme.
