Arkansas fans are weird

The funniest part of all that is them thinking CTV is just gonna drop us like a hot rock for Arkansas. They have a traditionally good baseball program. That’s it.

Arkansas fans aren't the only ones who think Coach V will be their next head baseball coach. I've seen the same chatter from Ole Miss fans, Mississippi State fans, Florida fans, and South Carolina fans. Several of baseball beat writers from the respective fanbases also assume Coach V will leave once DVH retires.

It's amusing how they all automatically assume things.

If Vitello can build the #1 program in the nation and wins natties and SEC championships here, and is well taken care of, then why would he ever leave?

Exactly. He may be established and comfortable enough by then not to go anywhere. To be fair, we don't know what factors may be involved and a lot can happen over time. But for now, it's hard to imagine him leaving should he continue to get all the support he and the program needs.

As someone said during last offseason: Why go follow in someone else's footsteps, when you can create your own legacy.

I feel bad for this, but...

Think that's bad--lookup Sternover.

Who cares what the pig squealers think. I’m just flattered they apparently think of us so often. Not sure why so many of them hate UT so much. They’re pretty far down my list. But whatever.
I know right?...I honest to god never even think about them or whatever they are doing...Because you just know they are going to screw it up so I just expect it and never even think about it...They are like that kid across they street you don't really talk to but when you see them they look at you and you look at them and you walk away with a small giggle and never look back at em. lol

A thing I have learned through the myriad of coaching searches is that established SEC coaches generally don’t leave a great situation for an iffy one. CTV came to a place with little expectations and to get to here in this brief amount of time is remarkable.

Arkansas expects this every year, as do the others mentioned. In any sport, a coach is a losing season away, but I think CTV has reached Home.

He built this in his name, likeness and image…from the ground up. Quit taking the bait people…He. Ain’t. Leaving.

GBO!!!

Well, as they say, money talks. I could see a scenario where a job like Florida or LSU or A&M or Texas opens up in the future and they throw so much money at Tony that he can't refuse. I hope that, at the rate White is showering coaches with money these days, that he gets a very high buyout in return, so as to give us at least some protection from poachers. Hopefully, we will build The House That Tony Built before anything like that develops. That should help keep him here. Another factor in our favor is that he is recruiting like crazy here at Tennessee, and is able to field a dominant #1 team despite our deficit in facilities and winter weather. So, recruiting here vs another place shouldn't be that much of a factor. i just hope we are able to keep up in the arms race for his compensation in the future.

Fair points. Money does talk. However, I think it speaks volumes that he didn’t leave for the big job vacancies (LSU, A&M) when they were open after last season. If Florida eventually fires Sully, then I suppose they could go after him. That fanbase is fickle though and Coach V seems to value tremendous fan support and enthusiasm. Texas? Perhaps. They certainly have the money, resources, and tradition. I don’t see them making a coaching change anytime soon though. Pierce seems to be doing well enough.

As long as White, Plowman, and Boyd are here, I don’t see an issue keeping up with the arms race.

There are definitely some reasonable takes, but the trend these days is like 90% unmitigated vitriol from Arky fans when Tennessee comes up. There’s a lot of great stuff going on in Fayetteville, so if it were me I’d probably spend most of my energy thinking about that.

It's an interesting dichotomy between a guy who was a former assistant at Arkansas and is generally liked who Hog fans want to do well, but who is also at a conference foe and had a tiff with DVH last season. If he was at a random school like Oklahoma State I think it would be 95% positive.

Arkansas fans tend to have vitriol toward every school in the SEC though. Our fanbase likes to troll a lot and it's why 4-5 teams every year in most sports claim that they are our "super bowl".

Yeah I just don't see Florida being committed enough in baseball to really pony up for anyone. Even though A&M has a ton of money I don't really see them being all that committed to baseball either, they seem all-in on football right now. LSU definitely could though. No idea about Texas could see that going either way but they have a really good thing going right now and going to the SEC should help. There are more good coaches out there than just Vitello that these schools could go after too, LSU hiring Jay Johnson was a really good get. Sometimes we only tend to only focus on our own team/coach but not every school that opens up will have Vitello as their #1 target I'm sure for various reasons. Fit is important too.

O'Sullivan is getting paid $1.3m at Florida currently, which is top 3-5 in the conference. Florida will pay.

It seems like Arkansas fans had a fondness for Coach V until he had that tiff with DVH. After that, their opinions and mood changed. Our team’s brashness also didn’t help things at all.

You make a great point about fit being important. There are indeed a number of different factors involved from both sides. I think LSU fans are in a “wait and see” mode about Johnson. The team has been a roller coaster so far and has had some growing pains. A&M had a solid hire with Schloss.

My guess is that several schools with head coaching vacancies will try to find the next Coach V (elite recruiter assistant coach) and try to replicate his success. Like you said, there are more good coaches out there across the country. It’ll be fascinating to watch the college baseball landscape over the next few years.
