Guy from the home state of Al Gore shouldn't go here.

Without Tennessee, it would just be the University of North Mexico.

University o Tennessee est. 1794 texas became a part of the us in 1845 so technically UT has been around longer than the entire state of texas.

i would say that tennessee is the "original" UT.

there was a university of tennessee before there was a state of texas

We are the original UT, they are copiers who admired our awesome idea, and if they p us off, we'll tell Mexico to take 'em back.

if it wasnt for the volunteers texas would be the university of mexico

U of Tennessee WAS founded BEFORE Texas was even a state !

Good thing people read the thread before they post. Thanks for all the fresh points, guys.

Yeah, I thought I saw the same thing said maybe two or three times, so I did a little investigatory digging.

I'm glad lawyers got involved and made it a registered trademark to sue anyone who uses it. We need more lawsuits.

I like how we used to always do the inter-locking UT logo. They claimed they did it first so we went solely to the power T and now they rarely use the inter-locking logo. Also, who wants to wear poop orange?

When the real UT began, the people in Austin, Texas weren't called "UT." They were called "Mexicans."

Tennessee actually sold the rights to the interlocking UT logo to Texas a few years ago. They bought our leftovers.

So now you all are saying that the University establishment day doesn't matter and we should go by how good the program is at sports? Or are you saying that its a combination of the two? :lolabove: Damn talk about making up the rules as you go. Please can you get the story straight then explain.

Oh, as far as the OSU vs. OSU vs. OSU, I figured that out long ago.

Ohio State = tOSU
Oregon State = OSU
Oklahoma State = Okie Lite

Maybe someone beat me to it, but isn't the "real" UT actually Utah?

Who comes to mind immediately when you say UM? Could be Memphis, Michigan, Mississippi, and many more.

Does Alabama try to lay claim to UA?

Maybe we should get a little more creative. When you hear UGA you know what school is being discussed. Even though there is no "Univerisity of Georgia" system like here in Tennessee and Alabama, they still include the "A" for Athens. Texas could be UTA and Tennessee could be UTK. Although that looks too much like UK and we all now UK is an abbreviation for toothless hillbilly :)

The point is there is no winning here. People in the SEC will associate UT with Tennessee, people in the midwest will associate UT with Texas. I'm not sure that there is a UT consensus in California or New York, and honestly I don't care what they think. We'll keep saying "Let's go U-T" and we will know who we're talking about.

I always tell my Longhorn friend that a Tejas jersey/hat/etc looks like a Tennessee jersey/hat/etc that someone swallowed and came out the other end of his digestive tract.

Never gets old when I say "I went to UT. No, the REAL UT."

Even worse they have tried to duplicate the Running Through the T at their home games. Its not the Pride of the South that's for sure.

As a born and bred Virginian and a very proud UT alum...I can guarantee you that Sam Houston was a Virginian. Please people...make sure you know of what you speak before you write. I doesn't do the rest of us any favors.

Sam Houston born in VA. Lived most of his life in TN.

If you were born in TN and moved to NY are you a Yankee? Let me know when you figure it out.
