First of all, good win against a solid team! I was impressed with the aggressive demeanor this team showed on both sides of the ball tonight. The offensive line, in particular, came out with a mean streak like they had something to prove. Having said that, there were several areas where this team could improve as we head toward conference play.

Bray was inconsistent. Up until the last drive of the first half, he wasn't playing well despite what the deep balls would lead you to believe. Looked like he was second-guessing himself and he had a few random throws where he missed his man by ten yards. In the second half, he settled down and played an excellent game.

Hunter dropped too many passes. This will fix itself, I think, as Hunter gets more gametime reps. He also came down with the Neal virus where he was trying to make too many moves after the catch, rather than just running forward. He cost himself one sure first down this way.

The secondary had an inconsistent game. I loved the four interceptions, but I didn't love the number of times NCST receivers were left all alone. It seemed like Glennon picked on Byron Moore for stretches of the first half, before our pass rush asserted its will.

Either Lane needs to start, or Neal needs to learn to run up the middle. Far, far too many plays bounced outside when there was more to be had going up the gut. The line played their tails off tonight, but in some ways Neal wasted their effort by running to the edge so often. Having said that, I loved the way Lane played. Physical north-south running will move the chains, score points and win SEC football games.

Where was Rivera? Against a team with preoccupied safeties and weak linebackers, I thought Mychal would leave an imprint on the game. Instead, he was almost invisible. I hope he becomes a larger part of the offense as the season goes on.

This was a great win, though, and I'm happy. Glennon is possibly the best QB we will face all year. We passed that test, and now I'm interested in seeing how we fare against a team who can run the ball.

in a nutshell this is what i got out of it.

at times we had trouble stopping the run.
a few blown coverages(most at beginning of game)
and we couldn't move the ball in the redzone the majority of the time.

we fix that and we should be good to go

In first half expecially, defense looked lost. Looking around, away from LOS, even when ball was snapped. They just didn't seem ready to play when it was time. We got good pressure but secondary was burned multiple times with wide open receivers.

Fair assesment Atzar. My takeaways: semblance of a running good (improvement); D was faster, hit harder, and had less missed tackles (improvement); and a healthy Bray+Patterson+Hunter along w/ Rogers will be a threat against our SEC foes.
The biggest improvement -as I saw it - was our defense. We allowed too many NCST receivers to get wide open for big yardage; but, our speed, harder hits, and less missed tackles are an improvement.

we couldnt stop the run because they were passing at will. When we started getting some pressure, that changed.

I definitely agree with you on the missed tackles. I'm pretty confident when saying that there won't be any Joe Adams punt returns this year.

The point about the redzone struggles is also a fair one, and it puzzles me. I think Hunter is our best weapon in that part of the field, but we didn't use him down there until the fourth quarter - instead we went the predictable route and shoved Neal into the teeth of the defense. Then once we did target Hunter, he forgot how to catch. Again, I do expect Hunter's problem to fix itself as he knocks the rest of the rust off.

I liked what Lane did. JH needs to clean up the dropped balls. Otherwise, there were pretty typical first game mistakes to be repaired.

I don't see the "Bray was inconsistent" at all though. Guy made very good decisions with the ball all night including some throw aways. If Hunter is his usual self, Bray is 30-40 or so with close to 400 yards. If that's inconsistency... give me a heaping helping every week.

Justin hunter dropped too many passes, do that in an SEC game and you lose by double digits.

And as far as the pistol goes, I think its one of the worst formations in college football. They break the line and the RB is left to get smashed

I thought our pass pressure was amazing tonight. Glennon had someone in his face on almost every play.

Glennon got to look at the roof of the dome often. Didn't take note, but how many times was Bray sacked?

Just one that I can recall.

Bray seemed to struggle to get into a groove in the first half. Take a look at the drive chart - we either connected on a big play or went three-and-out (Tiny's false starts didn't help). Early in the game he had a few incompletions that weren't just throwing the ball away - he was underthrowing receivers by ten yards.

That changed in the last drive of the first half (fumble aside) and he never looked back after that. To his credit, even when I felt that he was struggling in the first half, he never made any dangerous decisions when throwing the ball. From a ball-protection standpoint, he played great and never gave their secondary a chance to make plays.

I say a lot of this is first game of the season stuff. IMO a lot of it will be fixed within the next game or two. I don't think the DB's were horrible, I just think they had a rough start. They may of allowed a WR to get pretty open, but their closing speed and tackling and INT's were signs of them not being as bad as some think they are.

One of those underthrows was to Justin Hunter. I remember it because as it bounced off the turf, I saw #11 in orange #1 in red. It counted as an incompletion and looked bad on TV, but if Bray had thrown it like he originally intended Amerson would’ve been trying to outrun the offensive guys to the endzone.

Unless someone throws a monkey wrench into the situation

Besides the off sides, I think our team looked in mid-season form. This was far from a scrub we blasted tonight. Oh yeah, minus the blown coverages on D. Ok, so we looked like it was the third game of the season.
