Wes Rucker's assessment of Sunday's practice...
Handily winning a Southeastern Conference football game returned some swagger to the University of Tennessee football program. The Volunteers returned to practice Sunday night, and they were clearly a more confident bunch.

UT had just 275 yards of total offense against Mississippi State, but that was nearly three times the output previously unbeaten Vanderbilt had against the Bulldogs, who also held Auburn to three points.

“We made up our mind to take over the game, and it showed,” Vols senior tailback Arian Foster said.

Here’s a humbling dose of reality, though.

UT’s defense made a 34-3 victory over Mississippi State seem easier than it was, and the Vols’ offensive statistics weren’t that special.

And it gets much tougher this week, on several levels.

Clearly, it's good to have something positive to hang your hat on if you are a UT player who has been pummeling away for weeks trying to get out of the wet paper bag...

And there was Fulmer after the game..."We're not dead yet!"...

Now Hatvol comes along and snidely drops a victory prediction v. Bama... (You're a devil, Hat).

Folks, my eyes are wide open about what awaits Saturday night. More confident than before is the last thing I am. One actual scoring drive from the offense is not cause for Arian to pronounce...“We made up our mind to take over the game, and it showed,”...

There are realists, surrealists, and enablers, out there on this VolNation.

Fall in folks, what's this week's spin?

I felt a little better after reading Croom's assessment of our D. Trying to find the quote but he mentioned we were showing things they hadn't seen on film from us this year and it really allowed us to get to their QB. I'm hoping we have some more of that this weekend

We beat a BAD Miss. St. team at home. What's really to be excited about?? Have we improved that much, or are some just excited to win the first SEC game this year. IF, they beat Alabama and Fulmer let's Clawson call his own game then I will be very cautiously optimistic about making a bowl game.

Feeling more confident? No, regarding the offense which is where the issues have been all season long. Defense continues to bail them out.

Croom's assessment, enough said. Another round of kool-aid please.

Happy about the win - yes.

More confident about this Saturday? Slightly, but not much. Fulmer generally beats teams that we "out-talent" (with a few notable exceptions).

Alabama is a whole 'nother animal. They have close to equal talent and a vast advantage in the coaching match-up.

This game is much more likely to look like the florida game that the Miss St game IMO.

I feel a little better about the game Saturday because Terrence Cody got injured, not because of how Tennessee played.

The defensive line did a whole lot of twisting and stunting Saturday. It was nice to see them active up front.

Justin, we're just too young still with the new offense. Saban will stifle it.

Our DBs get run right by with frequency, and we still can't get off the field on 3rd down.

I'd like to think there's a chance. But seriously...

I think the UT defensive line should slip alka seltzers under their tongues just before their first series so they are foaming at the mouth the first time the bama o-line sees them.

Majors used to get the team wound up too tight for bama.....Fulmer has done a much better job of getting the team ready for bama. The players shouldn't be wearing an orange jersey if they can't get up for bama. I think Tennessee plays lights out for this one.

Will it be enough? Who knows, but I'll be there pulling for my Vols.

I hate bama!!!

Tennessee's offense will be God-awful next Saturday. In that I have no doubt.

But I like what I saw from the DL. Now there is a huge difference between Saulsberry from MSU and Andre Smith from Bama however.

I still don't think Tennessee will win, but it will be closer than the experts think, to borrow a line from Lee Corso.

In a word, no.

I didn't get to watch the game on Saturday but I was constantly getting updates via phone. As I saw our score climb all the way up into the 30's I joked with a friend of mine that we probably had 3 interception returns for touchdowns. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw how close to being right I actually was. JPW may not be a world beater but I don't see him giving us a chance to repeat Saturday's effort and that would be the only way I really see it being close.

Really wouldn't mind being proven wrong though.

We need to get Creer involved early to try to establish a running game. If not it'll end up like the UGA game. Stephens is not ready to put the team on his shoulders yet.

I will feel more confident if the weather forecast for rain increases Saturday night. We need a mudder - otherwise expect Jones to get behind Morley all night.

I noticed that Phil had a play card during the game. Has he started calling more of the plays or did he just have one to check what Clawson was calling?

I feel a little better about the game that we may be able to stick around, but I just think that we will fall back into the same problems we saw against Florida. I don't trust Chavis to continue playing press coverage like he did against MSU. Get ready to see the "bend don't break" defense and our offense will struggle against a better defense and better defensive coach in Nick Saban

The kicking game would be huge. We need to flip the field on punts, and make the FG's.

However, I think we need two defensive scores to stay in this one.

I feel slightly more confident since or defense is playing so well. (even though its mostly EB) and since bama has struggled in the 2nd half so many times this season. If they get way ahead of us like they did in GA it will be nearly impossible for us to get back in it.
Assuming bama gets ahead they will keep it on the ground as much as possible and not allow berry to get his picks.
