Seems like whenever we get punched in the mouth, we lie down. Seems we match up better with finese teams. What do you think?

I just stated in a similar thread that we need meaner, nastier linemen. Think about it: who on our team this year has emerged as the one or two guys that just pour it out on the field and all over the other guys? Who is our opposition afraid of? Anyone? Anyone? That's what I thought.

Now, click below and take a look at some of these guys and ask yourself -- who's going to fill those shoes? Because, until someone does, I'm afraid that 9-4 with a crappy bowl loss is about as good as it's going to get.

we were soft yesterday. we haven't always been that way. our defense and offense for the most part over the last 8 years has been pretty hardnosed and physical.

this year we were not.

I remember the pounding from Neb in the 90's. Arky stole our lunch money this year. Aub a few years back! There have been more. I just think we have a tendency to fold the tent when teams out hit us!

We were soft all year. After Harrell went out we got pushed around up front the rest of the year.

However, I'm not so quick to jump down our D's throat this year and say that we need to fire Chavis. our D was the only good part of our team last year. Take any team in the country and take away their best cover corner and their best pass rusher/run stopper and I bet they struggle as well.

If it weren't for our D in some game last year we may have been 4-7 or even 3-9....

but in regards to this thread, we were very soft, especially yesterday and it seems we come out soft at least 1 or 2 games during the regular as well every year.....

We didn't lie down the second time around against Auburn a couple years back... They simply had superior talent at almost every position.

However, yes, Tennessee does seem to be a bit too soft. I don't see a mean streak in either line.

Toughness comes from discipline and there is a lack of discipline on the team. If you are disciplined you continue to fight and play no matter what is going on. If you aren't at the first sign of trouble you fold. We need coaches who are going to hold players accountable and instill some discipling in the program

Yes, there are exceptions like Georgia this year and LSU last year, but usually, when something goes bad, we just fall flat.

Some examples would maybe be like the Alabama game. Yes, I know rivals will always play better, but when we drove we would throw an interception and then get stale for another 15 minutes... Yes it turned out a win, but when a team, especially a less talented team catches a big break, you can't just wait for yours to come. You need to proceed to beat them into the ground, not just give up until you get some fluke luck to fall.

I think part of our problems on D is that we are too worried about being fast and not about being tough. We recruit safeties and make them LBs, we recruit LBs, and make them DEs and we recruit DEs and make them DTs. By doing this, we are going to be quicker than most defenses, but we are undersized at some positions. For example, we obviously would have been better served by Adam Myers-White playing SS this year as opposed to getting a few plays a game at LB.

I don't know if it's weight training or what but I've played sports all my life and more specifically on a football level there is nothing better than running that mouth and just going at the other guy and letting him know he can't defeat you. He might bust you up but you'll never back down.

To be a lineman you have to be kind of like a closer in baseball, a little screw loose. Anyone see John Henderson before games get the snot smacked out of him by the trainer? Albert Haynesworth, as much as disagree with things he does the guy is driven to get at someone. Those guys played for the pride they played balls out no limit.

Even more that capable coaches Tennessee needs another Al Wilson. A guy that when players won't listen to the coaches they will listen to him because he isn't scared to get up in you one time and his intensity just inspires you. Tennessee hasn't had a player with that charisma since he left and I miss him more and more every year.

This year, I'd say yes simply based on getting the ball rammed down our throats. In 1998,no without a doubt, no, we were looking for guys to hit!

I wont say its all the coachs fault but soft and lack of disicpline are good words for what happend yesterday.
whenever things started to go well the shot themselves in the foot with a penalty or a turnover.

I don't know if we are soft, but I think a couple of UT guys pulled vaginal muscles during the game.
