Are we over rating ourselves??

*ignores D4H "easily are NC comment*

Anyway, I don't think we are over rating anything. I just think that there are a lot of analysts/media that are in show-me mode. They still respect us and are rating us high, but many are withholding the highest of accolades till at least they see us beat Florida. And I'm okay with that. Being in show-me mode is natural for any team that has been down for 8-10 years.

Come Sept. 24th, if we beat Florida at home and look good doing it, plenty of people will begin to take notice.

Most expect us to beat them. Only weak minded Tennessee fans think beating a potentially weak Florida proves anything.

The nation won't take notice unless we beat Alabama.

:stop: You guys are always optimistic but it looks like you forgot your meds today.

Always optimistic? I'm the bandwagon fan remember. I only follow the team closely if we're good.

If this team ain't good don't worry I'll be the first to say it and then you wont see much of me afterwards.

However, I know talent when I see it. And this team is loaded. They should win the national title.

Or are these guys blind? Ranking top 5 units they used a weird 3 players per position group bar but still. We were only ranked in one special teams number 1 but even then Desmond Howard used Medley as our third which seems weird to me as a certain punter is more highly regarded afaik. D line a no show? Secondary and oline I get but skill position? Even if you don't count Kamara as the third you could eeasily slot Wolfe in there and legit be in top 4. Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Iowa Hawkeyes rank among college football's best position groups

I know I didn't over rate ourselves in 1998. Bama fans, sorry lot and excuse for subhumans did not over rate themselves last year. It's called being accountable, winning, and doing what it takes to be champion. If your goal is to make it to Miami you'll never see Rio de Jainero. That is what occurs at places like UGA where you had a fan base, coach, and administration down there over a decade that had never set foot in a stadium to play for the NC and those particular folks never will as time moves in one direction. So yes last year we did over rate ourselves as another school walked off with the trophy. This year as a UT fan since the days of Dewey, Richmond, and Condredge I require their goal be the championship and that's it. This year to me is no different. Too Short- If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch, blow the whistle. Am I realistic? Yes, I understand when we have the talent and people in place that knows the difference between sic 'em and come here. 120 is a sic 'em group AND I know they have sic 'em type opponents on our schedule this year and 121 should be a sic 'em crew as well IMO. But that has zero to do with rating to me as a Vol program (or any worthwhile endeavor IMO) you should always either be champion or closing the gap to be champion. If that's not happening
you get rid of the people being paid to be champion. Navy SEALs at BUDs- Second place is first loser. Happy Fathers Day to all qualified and their qualifiers !!!!

Until the end of August is the time for supports of all football programs to languish in the ability of 'their team' to win it all - real or imagined. No games have been played so there are no wins or losses, reality is yet to set in!

As a prelude to a coming season one needs to look back at the previous season, good and bad, to see the possibility for the new season. Tennesse, last year, had a very potent offense featuring the running game and short passes to running backs and TEs. Missing was almost everything down field to WRs. The defense was serviceable but did not play to the level of talent available - way too many third and longs converted (not to mention fourth and long conversions, ugh).

Of the four losses last year three would have been averted with just a little better defensive play in crunch time. The offense had an 'off day' against Arkansas but even that game could have been won with a little better defense.

Coach Jones apparently felt defensive execution was lacking as the team now has a new DC for the coming season. It remains to be seen if a new defensive scheme and different play calling will yield better results, hopefully it will.

Dobbs has been critized for lack of accuracy on down field passes. Rewatching the games from last season indicates to me that probably 90% of the down field passing game shortcomings lies with WR play. Wrong routes, and drop balls make the passer look inept when the fault lies with the receiver. There is certainly potential in the WR group - but POtential means you haven't done it yet! A 20 year old Peyton Manning would have had down field passing problems throwing to last year's WRs!

Tennesse fans should be optimistic for the coming season. If the WR position steps up and with just a little better defensive play this could be an SEC championship season for the Vols.

Id venture as far as to say that 10-2 would be a *great* season, and would be capped by a meaningful bowl against a top-tier team.

10-2 would mean we lost to Florida and Alabama.

That can't happen.
