Just wondering if anyone 'in the know' knows whether we are getting any looks from big time recruits lately? I would hope with all the recent success on the floor we might be getting some serious consideration from elite recruits. Then again I think I would be happy with the way CRB develops players the way he has from this group which is elite in my mind. Your thoughts please.

I like the way CRB develops players. To develop players you must have them in your program for several years. I am not a fan of 1 and done players. I like to get to know players and see them develop. With that said I am not against having a 1 and done player but I want 5-7 "good" players to go along with a 1 and done.

I don't want to be like Calamari and have a new team every year because 3 players left early and 2 graduated. Yes I know KY wins a lot of games with 1 and done players, they are just not my style. I am old school and think it should be about the team not about the player.

Me too mostly. I'm stoked about where we are right now. But it's been a 4yr construction. I don't see us going for the UK/Duke paradigm. But, I do think in a "ratings" sense we'll see the Vols land more highly ranked players.
CRB would like to see the Schofields, Bones, Biwdens, Turners, & Alexanders get to this level in 1-2 years instead of 3-4. Those opens the roster for more attrition, but also can keep you among the elite without the long rebuilds.

All that is conceptual of course. It all comes down to the individuals year in and out.

If we start nabbing multiple 5* players, the NCAA won't turn a blind eye to the shoe money influence like they do for UK, KU, UNC, Duke, etc......

I think the question is, Is CRB looking at any big time players? like some here, if they only want to play 1 maybe 2 years, they won't come to UT. It is about the culture and what you want to establish, I haven't looked, but how many one-and-done players actually make a splash in the NBA? Since I don't follow them, no names come to my head.

So, if you have a culture like KY, is it really a culture? it's more like beating the coach vs. the players, is the biggest thrill. I don't know how schools like Duke, NC, KY, etc. recruit players like that and the sports world want to call them a basketball school. Zion is a freak, but is he in the NBA? plenty of Zions in the NBA........jmo. Are you a VFL in your a one-and-done?........I wouldn't think so, UNLESS, there is a injury that ends career.......that is a pass.

Flyfishin, I think more one and done players turn out to be successful than unsuccessful. Some all star caliber players are Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, John Wall, Kevin Love(earlier in his career), Bradley Beal, Karl Anthony-Towns, DeMarcus Cousins, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Blake Griffin, Ben Simmons, and Russell Westbrook. These one and done players are top level athletes and I can’t blame them for getting paid.

Agreed. I think a good mix can maybe be the best scenerio. KY has won a lot of games due to talent, but this brand has also backfired on them several years. Most years they are good enough to win a lot of games and make a deep run in the tourney, but some team usually more experienced comes along and picks them off in the end. This years class I think is a good mix with 5 star Josiah James and 2 developmental players. IMO Davonte Gaines will be the big surprise. He has skills and once developed, will be a stud.

Westbrook and Griffin weren't one and done players. Westbrook was actually a backup.

Interesting fact...1 in 5 one and dones are Calipari players. I'd love to see Tennessee get the best recruits ever year but I'd hate to see players leaving that quick. Watching them progress is one of the fun parts of being a fan.

I agree with this. Watching Josh Richardson’s progression was one of the more fun things I’ve watched following UT players.

we do have 5 star Josiah James coming in, which is pretty cool...would imagine the staff makes contact with others that we may not know about...Coach Barnes is picky about his recruits...:D

GO VOLS...RECRUIT LIKE HECK!

Maybe part of the reason a lot of 5 stars don't look at Tennessee is because Barnes is tough as hell on our guys and prefers harder working high character players over the drama queen freak 1 and done athletes.

Good point.

However, it depends on the coaches who recruit these one & dones.

Some of them will tweak their offense to fit their play style or they’ll follow a certain system that the coaches want whether they like it or not.

I don’t see Barnes as the type of guy who’d let one or two one & done players call the shots.

Barnes is a straight shooter.

Barnes did recruit Lecque and Simons. So it isn’t like he isn’t trying to get some one and done players.

I actually have come to believe this. Watched the David Thompson story last night. UNC did it to NCSU as soon as they began to load up and challenge them. Happened when the gigantic hammer dropped on Bruce Pearl, while Calhoun & Boeheim got slaps on the wrist for more. I'm sure they'll relent if we have 1 FF run this season. But the powers that be will drop the hammer were Rick Barnes to truly load up at KU, UK, UNC, Duke, & MSU etcs expense.

It's a real loss to see this rapid turnover in the top levels of CBB. Just go to Youtube and watch some old classics where elite players clashed when they were upperclassmen. Charles Barkley and AU vs Dale Ellis and UT comes to mind. 1977 UT v UK is another w King, Grunfeld v Roby Givens etc. A lot of that is lost these days. Would love to see that restored to CBB if possible with a college baseball (i think?) style choice. HS->Pro or Longer term in college.

Barnes recruits guys that can handle in your face coaching. They have to be mature enough to be coached. He is selective in his choices. But to be consistent he has to recruit talent. No one it going to come out to watch a 15-18 win team maybe or barely making the dance.

KU is in some deep doo doo for that stuff right now.

Nothing is going to happen to Kansas. The only reason Louisville got in trouble for cheating is because they are lower on the NCAA pecking order than Kentucky.....

The elite players 1 and done players are not playing in NBA, b/c of coaching they got in college. They are great talents when they start playing for Coach Calamari
and same for Coach Saint K, they get the tv game exposure and Blue Blood hype . I don't know how those 2 coaches can get credit for players going NBA after 1 season
playing a game they have played all their life , so go Ky Duke their coaches will get u to NBA nooooooo. GO VOLS
