Are we forgetting about Mr. Jackson in 2022

It seems that we have lost our way about our 2022 quarterback, since we want a transfer portal quarterback. We’ve got to give him a chance in Hype’s system.

We need Hooker. Jackson is going to be very raw with a ton of upsides but unlikely to be able to compete day 1 as the main guy. Bright future, but rushing him will just turn everything sour.

I agree, but I just didn’t want us to forget about him, and get the impression that we could go get other quarterbacks. I think we need to be careful how they handle Jackson, but I think everything will be alright at the end. Yea, he needs some time.

I'm still lukewarm on TJ. He has the size and has a nice arm. He isn't a guy likely to be an effective running QB in college. He doesn't have elite passing stats. I'm not down on him. I fully trust Heupel to know what he wants in a QB prospect. But I'm kind of wait and see on him. I hope he's great... but hope that UT recruits QB's well enough to recruit over him if he's not.

What's this "we" sh!t? I have exactly zero scholarships I can give out, choose exactly zero players to go into the games and call exactly zero plays. I suspect you have half that many.

I don't think anyone has lost their way. Hooker is QB1 for 2022, Jackson probably needs to redshirt if possible. We need a serviceable backup to Hooker which we will likely need to find in the portal. I don't consider Milton a serviceable backup unless he can make huge strides in the off season.

What could we add? Seems to me that the playbook is fully available with Hooker.
I thought I’ve heard somewhere that we’ve barely scratched the surface of the playbook. And if I HH comes back they’re really going to get into this off-season.

Whoa there, he's a Vol fan just like you, no need to be pushing your teammate over the helmets, sheesh.

Best case scenario - Hooker returns next season and teaches the playbook to Trayven Jackson and Jackson takes over his Sophomore year and balls it out.

Worst case - the wheels fall off and we are stuck 'fishing' in the portal for a QB that much like Hooker this year won't catch onto the playbook until the 5th or 6th game and we end up with the same results as this season...

On a side note, I did get to see Trayven play a couple of games this year and it was a mixed bag. In the first game I witnessed his stats were very pedestrian (granted his high school team runs a VERY heavy RB centric offense) but he did show flashes of what could be. Second game his stats were very, very solid and showed that he makes extremely good decisions with the ball as he was like 13 for 15 with zero turnovers.

You always want to adjust to the QB you have. Some things may be vastly different between Hooker and Jackson. So a little wrinkle here and there would never hurt. For far to long Tennessee has had coaches that refuses to adapt to the personnel they have. Hopefully Hype hits the ground running with Jackson after Hooker hangs them up at Tennessee

Glad you can add some first hand knowledge to the discussion. We have many nervous nellies and chicken littles throwing out comments they know absolutely nothing about. Thank you.

This is the SEC "conference". Usually doesn't treat freshmen and rookie coaches all that well.

Why redshirt him ? I don’t like that for a couple of reasons. First, Hooker has ONE more year. And unless you plan to use the portal for a QB to come in, Jackson is presumably next in line. I want to see him in every game he can, playing clean up to get some experience … Second, the redshirt basically turns 4 years into 5 and that first year he can grow with the playbook and in practice, sure. But what are the chances, if he’s good, that he stays for that last year ? Yes he COULD stay the extra year, but I’m thinking get him on the field and in some games so he IS ready when Hooker leaves. Just my opinion.

We want a transfer because you need more than 2 QBs and Milton could leave
GREAT POINT - looking back at it, the start of 2021 there were FIVE QBs on the roster...Salter, Bailey, Mauer, Hooker, and Milton.
End of 2021, we are down to just two.

Two scholarship QBs - NOT 2 QBs.

From someone above ... TJ is NOT going to be number 2 QB ... he will be behind Milton. Even if Milton stays (which I think he will) ... Tennessee will still be looking to fill the 'class' hole behind Milton in the QB group ... likely Transfer Portal ... only when they find someone they want.
Patience is a virtue.

I have not forgotten about Jackson. That is why I was wondering about many on Volnation chattering about a portal QB.

Exactly. Hooker, Milton, Freshman .
This could be your options next year.
Hooker could get hurt 2 games in and then you’re most likely Fckd the rest of the year

Our QB room is about as full as Dooley’s OL room he left us. I’m all for adding depth through the portal until Cut brings in Arch. 😁
