Are we any better?

Nine wins isn't great when you play twelve games and the only reason we point to those seasons as "great" is because we have sucked so badly since firing CPF

Not to mention that 9 wins includes the bowl win. Butch never managed more than 8 regular season wins, and peaked at 5 conference wins.

Is there any more reason after game 1 of this staff to believe than there was after game 1 of Kiffin, Dooley, or Jones?
At least Jones had had some success as a head coach. We have literally no idea what to expect from Pruitt. Some like to act like he is a defensive genius but he basically coached at places that had great defenses loaded with 4 and 5 star talent already. Almost any decent defensive coordinator would have looked really good in the roles he had. We just don’t know if Pruitt would have had much success being a defensive coordinator for a team with more average talent. And we have no idea what kind of results he will have as a head coach. Obviously, I hope he does great...I’m just not as confident as some people on here.

Im with ya. Those 9 wins wasn’t good enough to me. But alot of these players. My point was that some ppl make it sound like the only season our guys were apart of was the 4-8 season. They also played on the 9-4 seasons.

It looked like last year in every way. Even the coaching. Why not take advantage of the one thing we felt good about going into the game? Our WRs! Why not let jg throw the ball down the damn field?
Maybe because the O-Line got such a bad start, Jarrett would not have had time? Later in the game when they had 2 possession or more leads, then obviously they would be looking for that. Still, the first game with a whole new everything. I think after they answered our second TD it became more of a scrimmage than a game we thought we could still win. We were inconsistent in every area. They were consistent in making big plays to get a lead and then were able to run the clock. I think Jarrett needs work on touch passing, which is what it takes to get it to the big guys down the sidelines. He wants to throw darts every time when those types of plays rely more on the receiver making the play on the back end. Overall, playing a ranked, veteran team with a new coach and new system was not a favorable situation for us. It would have been nice to have played Carson Newman or Sewanee for our first game, but then we'd be talking SEC Championship right now instead of how we never will be all that!

I couldn't believe the one play where their DL just pushed through our RT & RG and sacked JG. They had him double-teamed and it almost looked like he just walked right through them. Awful.

Tackling was awful, DL got zero penetration most of the night. A few signs of small improvements, but overall? Pretty disappointing. Not just the loss, but the way we looked. I had hoped we would be better prepared.

I’d say no. Still tackled like crap. Cant anticipate in the secondary and the offensive line is horrible. We’re slow and bring no intensity to the field.

Maybe we’ll be better someday, but this team looked way too much like the team Butch rolled outed last year.
Bull crap! Maybe you need to watch more football

QB was better. RB's were better. WR's made some catches. After that, no. Oline got destroyed. Entire defense looked bad.

The offensive line started out just as bad as last year in fact it look like Coleman Thomas was still the center. The difference is in this game they did seem to improve where is last year they just stay consistently bad all throughout the game.

WV just backed off, they didn't improve, poor JG
He had time. He's not a good qb

JG was one of few bright spots, what game did you watch?

I’m not sure if mentioned but our starting corners are true freshman. They have some growing up to do. It hindered a lot of things for defense. Offense showed some signs of good things to come. Tough loss and hard pill to swallow but things aren’t going to change overnight regardless of any coach on the sidline. May possibly be an long season but I do think UT will get back to winning again.

Thought we had a defensive genius. Nothing, not anything, on that side improved.

Wrong......and I feel sad for you and the others on here who cannot recognize progress because all you will allow for is perfection. The OP of this thread obviously lives for instant gratification. And the title of this thread proves my point without doubt.

Coaches live in the real world and coach and teach for progress...not perfection. Our team did make PROGRESS today...and our team ATTITUDE is not even CLOSE to what we displayed last year.

Our offense started slow but ran the ball with some physicality and aggression. Our OC didn't call a perfect game, but adjusted and adapted--for the most part--to what would work and what was working. Our OL got better as the game progressed....JG actually played a very good game....not one INT...not one turnover...

Defensively--our guys only had 1 busted coverage--and it was #28 on the play when he left his zone and left the RB wide open to catch the ball and score an easy TD.

We all knew that our secondary was suspect....everyone knew that #22 is not a SEC caliber Safety.
Most of you just REFUSE to accept that our LBs are not very good....WVU specifically targeted and attacked our LBs and Safeties....
Our FR DBs knew their assignments and were running with their receivers for the most part.....Grier put the ball perfectly in the windows today....and there just wasn't anything anyone could do to stop him.

Grier played his butt off....he only missed 2 or 3 open receivers from what I can remember....WVU had several drops that hit them in the perfect spot.
That offense is as good as any offense we will face all year in the passing game. Nobody we play will throw the ball as well as WVU did today.

7-5 is very attainable this year....and I will be ecstatic if we finish 8-4.

GO VOLS!

Oh....and I forgot....flame away in your drunken stupors.

one thing I think was a real turning point that no one has mentioned was the weather delay. The second quarter we were totally controlling the clock, the one drive keeping. WV D on the field for almost 9 minutes. Tje game plan I believe was to wear down WV and keep pounding the ball. But instead of a regular halftime, WV got over an hour break to regain their wind. I feel we were on the brink of wearing them down. Just my admittedly amateur analysis FWIW

The key is to see the team improve over the course of the season. I have more faith in this coaching staff to get that done...A rebuild doesn;t happen in the offseason..it takes game experience and live teaching lessons for full development.

All I hope is that at the end of the season we finish with some positive momentum, looking at a team much improved from game 1

I don't really believe that WVU is the best passing team that we will see all year. The passing teams we see will also be
excellent running teams. Our pass defense is hoping the receiver trips and falls down. Our run defense is hoping the rbs are under 100 pounds and run about a 7.0 40.
