Are Things As Bad As They Seem?

I sat through the game at Williams-Brice on Saturday and it's pretty bad, doesn't mean it can't be fixed, but it didn't look good on Saturday. No sense of the team being
tight group looking at the sidelines. I'm all in for Butch and the Vols but something (scheme or coaches) has to give.

How do we go from Cam Sutton and Alvin Kamara foregoing the NFL draft to this dumpster fire? All of this stuff is really unbelievable. How in the world has it come to this? Or are we blowing things way out of proportion?

And this is in the same year when TN beat FL and GA, yet sill found a way to lose the SEC East. All though not a completely done deal, the likelihood of TN winning the East is very low.

TN is now making all the wrong headlines:

"Tennessee showed it never was back, while Georgia has a long way to go
After a 5-0 start to the season and proclamations that they were back to national prominence, the Vols have lost three in a row, and the hype is gone."

"Good Ol' Rocky Flop: Tennessee falls out of contention"

It will be a sign of Team 120's character, resiliency and maturation to maintain a mental toughness that keeps them from being too affected by either the lows of losses that always somehow seem to feel like deep, dark and never-ending valleys when you're going through them or by the highs at the peak of winning when you feel on top of the world and you can be dangerously tempted to believe the hype that would lull you into believing you'll always be immune from any type of failure.

Wisdom is your compass that keeps you pointed in the right direction when adversity brings its disorientation. It reminds you there is always a balanced middle ground that keeps you emotionally stable during both of these types of tests. It is through these testing fires of adversity that the true character of a champion is forged and tempered by trials -- because all the dross of distractions are purged away leaving only that which is purest by testing to remain -- the heart of a true champion.

Why are only highly rated players leaving, everyone knows high profile players are sometimes difficult to handle, but you have to be able to handle them if you consistently want to play for championships.

Yes. I have heard that even Smokey is leaving. He doesn't like his current role as a "Coon Dog" Mascot and will be going somewhere else to try to possibly be a Tiger or maybe Beaver.

I really liked Ol Smokey. Thank you for all you've done and I wish you the best.

Genius.

Butch Jones needs to be fired immediately.

I won't be surprised if Butch talks Hurd into staying. But any 'fix' is just a temporary band-aid that won't solve anything. The problems will continue.

From the reports coming from the meeting it sounds like the team is very divided at this point. I think many of the players feel that the coaching is sub par, and it is really hard to blame them at this point.

If Butch is the guy, he's taking care of business. The only thing having a break down at this point is volnation. Sorry you feel like you have to know everything that is happening. I think if things had degraded as far as volnation is reporting there would be some kind of announcement being made today. I'm beginning to believe Butch has got this. Just ...as usual... a handful of loudmouth dog kickers trying to kill the program on the internet again.

I agree with you. We don't know what "really" is going on. I think our Coach has this!

The coaching is average. Butch has been a great ambassador for TN football. Excellent recruiter and salesman! Average coach as his current win % after 3 2/3 seasons on the Hill of .565 suggests.

I have no idea how much longer Butch will be at TN but he clearly is NOT the long term solution to bring TN back to the college football elite.

TN may or may not win out but the vast majority of TN country will not look at this season as a success without being in the SEC championship game. Even Dave Hart said last year after the horrible losses to OU and FL that 2016 was TNs year. :ermm:

I actually do have some "insider information" for once, although nothing too juicy. I really have no way to prove it and I know most will assume I'm full of it, but I'll go ahead and let you know what I've heard anyway. My close friend and college roommate was a walk-on about a decade ago, and he is now an assistant coach for any area high school. Anyway, at least one of his players from recent years is currently a walk-on for UT, and my friend stays in touch with him regularly. Now obviously this info is coming from a walk-on and not a star of the team, so take it for what it is worth. What this player told my friend that Butch hasn't lost control of the team (granted this was yesterday morning before the news about Hurd came out), but a lot of guys don't really respect him much any more and are starting to view him as a clown. They apparently joke around about how Butch duped them into coming to UT and that he is basically a glorified snake oil salesman. I don't think the players hate him or anything but they just think of him as somewhat of a joke and in way over his head. They all apparently refer to him as Lyle behind his back and make fun of his coach speak and never ending cliches during interviews. But he said the main thing the players can't stand is that Butch thinks of himself as this offensive genius and is so in love with his style and process that he is unwilling to ever even consider changing anything. He said many players have gone to Debord and asked about changing up some plays and formations from time to time but he has made it clear that Butch will accept no changes to his system. Butch is a black and white thinker and very stubborn. He thinks his system is infallible when run properly and assumes it is always just the players fault for not executing it correctly when things go wrong. He supposedly won't even entertain the thought of changing anything offensively or bringing in a coach with a different philosophy. He said Debord is not the problem because he just runs Butch's system. And if we bring in a new OC it will just be more of the same because Butch has to have total control. He did mention all the players seem to like Debord and he is actually a pretty funny guy.

There has been contention in the locker room for several years
Look I dont think Ole Butch is as good a recruiter as many on here have said rrepeatedly. It takes more than a little talent to make a good player. It takes character (some of these guys have very little) toughness and stickability as well as intelligence to make a true 4 or 5 star prospect. Ask yourself how many have this? I'll give you a few that are hurt might have a few of the characteristics I mentioned above but for the most part....meh. Good evaluators on this staff are few and far between. Bama and us were battling for very few of the same players over the last 4 years. We've been getting a lot of teams second third and fourth choices

I would be disappointed if the players didn't call him Lyle behind his back.

Even more scary is how we went from 5-0 and In Butch We Trust to 5-3 and the place is burning to the ground in a matter of a couple weeks. Incredible.

He also said they make fun of him for being in the band and one player had Butch's high school band picture taped up inside his locker and Butch got mad and made him take it down. The other thing I forgot to mention is he said Butch has no personality or sense of humor and is too serious and stressed out all the time. It can make for a tense locker room and takes some of the fun out of playing.
