Are Jon Gruden & Lane Kiffin really in Knoxville right now?

I read on one of the news sites that Lane Kiffin was seen playing golf w/ Jim Haslam-- but I haven't heard anything legit confirming The Chin or Gruden.

As stated on John Pennington's radion show, the rumor was first that Cower was seen playing golf with a booster, it then changed to Kiffin seen playing with Haslem, but Haslem does not play golf.

Does anyone know, if Gruden was there last night for the game, as was rumored that he's be there?

A lot of the excitement surrounding Lane Kiffin is connected to the staff that he might assemble - namely Monte Kiffin. I have a few questions about this. Monte is currently under contract with Tampa, right? Unlike their head coaches, TB does not have buy out clauses for their assistants - and are notoriously harsh about not letting coaches out of contracts. So, why are we considering this part of the package? Is his contract up soon enough that we can just put a DC in place until Monte frees up if Kiffin gets the job? If so, who would take that job?

Also, Monte will probably be 70 before he frees up from his contract (he's 68 now). What other aspects about the staff he might assemble are intriguing...because I'm not sold on the Monte aspect happening.

Again there is nothing in Contract law for any coach to leave NFL to go to College. The action TB can take and did once is in Tort. It really has no teeth as damages are speculative.

Did they take action against a NFL to college move or NFL to NFL? I'm assuming the league regulates NFL to NFL moves when under contract?

So..the general thought is that Monte would walk away from his contract in TB and let TB do what they want to do?

It was an NFL to college move cannot remember what coach but they are the only ones to try it and it failed. Here is a good article discussing it relative to Petrino. Sports Law Blog

It is the last element of the claim where it fails. Damages, how would you prove them? Damages in law must be real. The feeling of depression because your team is not as good is not a damage. Money lost is.

As much as I would love for Gruden to come here I just don't see it happening. Chris Mortenson was on the radio this past week and stated Gruden is not leaving Tampa. He also stated that Gruden does not like rookies and he definately wouldn't like 18 year old kids. Hopefully, Mort is wrong!

I was chatting again with my friend who is a TB fan about the Monte Kiffin angle. He brought up some good points. His overall point was that he loves Monte Kiffin and would respect his decision to go be with his son to get his new job off to a good start. However, he also noted that TB would not feel the same way because they are NOTORIOUS for being sticklers about their contracts. His point wasn't so much suing for damages, or where the case would go in court...but that if he were Lane, he would be very concerned about getting black-balled by the NFL.

Noting that the league is probably getting very tired of the Sabans and Petrinos, if TB makes a stink about Monte walking away, the league may listen. And, as far as a fathers sins not hurting their sons - his point was tell that to Rob and Rex Ryan, who are pretty much guaranteed never to get a head coaching job because of how volatile their dad was.

Interesting. One thing I took from the article is that if Gruden contacted the university as opposed to vise-versa, UT is off the hook for damages per requirement 3.

Of course any penalties to Gruden personally could be made part of our offer to him.

In the NFL you can only get black balled if you are not good. Good coaches will always get hired.

Well, he'll have to take that gamble I suppose...because he's getting a job somewhere (probably either Washington, Tennessee, or Clemson)...and he's probably going to ask his dad to come with him...and TB will likely raise a stink.

I am not sure his dad is really coming with but maybe. His dad could recommend a guy he knows would be good. Coaches generally know who the other good coaches are. I have been wondering if any coach that comes in might give Steele a look at Alabama. He is UT guy and seems to be doing a good job.

I think that Steele would have to be given a look....

I will start out by saying that, yes, Gruden would be an awesome catch that's for sure. However, I can't help but be nervous about this whole process. Nebraska has started a horrible precedent by firing a guy who had pretty impressive records but could not quite get over the hump to a NC, and I just wonder if getting a coach will be hard for us because of that.

I mean look at Michigan last year. Rodriguez was seriously nowhere near their number one pick. They went after other high profile coaches, to coach at Michigan, one of the most storied programs in the nation, and had to "settle" in the end. And really, a lot of people across the country are accusing us of doing the same thing: firing a coach that had a "successful" run (although I really believe they are completely ignoring or blowing over the dismal stats of the last 5 or 6 years).

So yeah, count me as one of the fans that are going to be biting their nails until the paper is signed and the ink dry.... hell, until the guy runs through the T for the first time next September, come to think of it.

Dude. Calm down. If settling means we get a Rich Rodriguez we should be fine.

In Fulmer's last season he has fielded the worst team in UT history. That's not comparable to the Frank Solich firing.

Who knows, but how often does TB have a bye week the same weekend as homecoming? And with his wife's parents living in the area, I could see coming up early to visit with them.

Jon and wife already own a home in the K-ville area, NW I believe. They bought it within the last 12 months....
