Are Dobbs' Mechanical Issues Fixable? - Article

Dobbs will be just fine, but it does beg the question, how much better could he have been if he had a QB coach in his 4 years here? I'm hoping and thinking Dobbs is going to have an absolutely awesome NFL career. He's in a great situation.

I am hoping he does, but thinking he likely won't have an "awesome" NFL career. It will take a lot of improvement and a bit of luck. 4th round QBs don't usually have awesome NFL careers. Decent to good - that's even a maybe

The real question is how much better could he have been had he had a good offense line and did not have to run for his life all the time. Not saying the OL did not get better over time - but there were times he made the play running because he had to run.

In before, Tom Brady was selected in the 6th round

Notice I said "usually", which is accurate. Tom Brady was an unusual occurrence.

And you forgot to add the first round QB picks that become busts. Dobbs will do fine. His work ethics alone are light years above even a first round pick.

He will get significantly better coaching in the pro's as with all players.. So anything that needs tweaking can be done.. He is also has the luxury on not having to play right away

Could also be partly to the classes he needed take for his major. He stated multiple times that this last August he was taking 16 hours. I think that's part of the reason his stock was rising. He could spend all of his time on football for the most part over the last few months. I think he was only taking a few hours this semester. All can be valid points.

Mike DeBord was your QB coach.

No he wasn't. He was an OL guy, rarely was with the qbs in practice, virtually exclusively with the OL. We had a GA, Nick Sheridan, who worked with the qbs.....he's now the qb coach at Indiana, where Debord is the new OC.

DeBord was officially your QB coach. That was part of his title, just like Bajakian before him.

I hope so

Have you spent a lot of time around first round picks? I wonder because that's a crazy statement to make

In title ONLY. He didn't work with the qbs, was almost exclusively with the OL. That's why you see the same setup now that he's Indiana's OC....he's not the QB coach, our former GA who worked with Dobbs and the other qbs here (Sheridan) is now his qb coach up there.

Bajakian, on the other hand, actually was a qb coach and worked with the qbs because that was his background/expertise. He's now Winston's qb coach at Tampa Bay.

You saw what he did with a little bit of real coaching in the Senior Bowl. He'll be fine

Dobbs went from "not going to the league" last year, to "2-4th" round pick this year. That was before NFL coaching was in effect.
I absolutely agree that a pro coach got more out of him but believe they should have. That is why they are the pro coaches.
But I can't credit a camp for the progress that earned him a top 4 round projection, before he ever attended said training. Seems an exaggeration.

I'm asking because I clearly have no idea:

Did DeBord run the QB meeting room?

No just watch the NFL to know it as fact. Here's a quick article since 2000 on 10 first round QB picks that wound up as busts. I skipped on an article that listed 50 first round QB busts just for the TL;DR factor.

No, it's not a fact. You said it like very few first rounders work hard. Sure there's a couple every year not willing to do the work. I was responding to your opinion that sounded absolute in nature.

BTW, I spent 6+ years working for an NFL franchise. Have been to more games in person that I can remember and watched even more on TV. So I've "watched" my share
