Here's a good lesson for all of you young whippersnappers.

Unless Knoxville looks like NYC in the movie The Day After Tomorrow...

The University NEVER closes.

I was there for 6 years, and we never closed. I had to trudge from Carrick to Ayres in ice thicker that a rink. I fell at the road between the Library and Tyson Alumni House and slid all the way down the hill on my @$$. (Actually, that was really fun:lolabove: )

I will never again make fun of that old-folks story about "walking 3 miles to school, in the snow, uphill both ways"...it is possible!

It closed for a day in the winter of '77, too early for you young'uns since you were probably still twinkling in your Daddy's eye.

I must say nippin' on a half pint of Rebel Yell does take the chill off the day!

I could be wrong (it was a long time ago), but I believe that in Jan '80 (soph year), the university closed because of snow and 2 students were killed on that day. I remember the Beacon reporting that the admin would never close the university again because of snow. Again, I could be wrong, but that's what I remember...

They may have said that, but they closed down for a couple of days in Winter of '96, I believe. It may have been '95. We got 10 inches of snow or more, so it would have been difficult to open. Those were good times. I seem to remember another 6-inch snow that didn't get us out of class that same winter.

I seem to remember something about a student being shot because he threw a snowball at a car but I can't remember the year.
