April is confederate heritage month

Oh yeah they were well on their way to voluntarily giving up the human beings they felt they owned.
Less than 3 percent of southerns owned slaves. so, yes it would have ended.

Of course many countries still have slavery today, which is crazy.

what? if you mean eventually, sure. but it would have been a lot later than it would have naturally occured if there was no civil war.
It would have. I believe there was a push and the confederate government to look at embossing slavery

It would have taken the Industrial Revolution.

Machines produce more, cheaper, than people. It is a lesson being replayed with automatic order/check out kiosks today. Once machines could do the work, plantation owners wouldn’t want to feed the mouths they owned.

If course, industrialization may have been slower without the war itself, as war breeds innovations that often find civilian use.

Countries still have tens of thousands of slaves in Africa and the Middle east

There is nothing honorable about being ignorant as hell about it.
Agreed, knowledge is power and the tool of reason.

I’m a black American. I don’t believe the Civil War was fought only to end slavery.

Was the Confederacy in the right? What is everyone missing? Educate us.

Slavery wasn't the only issue, but it was the main reason for the states' rights issue

Fun fact. There wasn’t anything honorable about the north either.

War wasn’t over ethics. It was over money and power.

North won and immediately passed laws dehumanizing black citizens.

Boston is one of the most racist cities in the us.
Glad we agree there's nothing honorable about the Confederacy.

Oh mercy. Would enjoy having this discussion, but perhaps better at a beer summit. Would you happen to be around Knoxville?

But I will leave you with this. Ultimately, military force determined the Confederacy would not become an independent nation.

My understanding of another reason the north won ,
After we really found out what the north was fighting for ( they wanted our women ) we just quit and when home

For sure there were other economic and political issues, many of which were intertwined. Were any of them singularly bigger than slavery?

No because it would have been no different had the south been industrialized and the north agrarian slave holders who were under the thumb of their southern countrymen.

do you mean "abolishing"?

I know right at the end they "allowed" slaves to fight on part of the south with some super sketchy promises that made it sound like they would be free after. But I don't know of any effort for wide spread abolishment of slavery. and I am pretty sure they only "allowed" way too late for it to be implemented.

Yes. Abolish. There were hundreds of newspapers calling to arm slaves to help defend against the invading north.

in 1865. and the thought amongst most was that they were still slaves, owned by their owner.

there isn't any legislation that I can find that would have freed any slave who agreed to fight as a condition of fighting, nor even one who survived on the "winning" confederate side.

newspaper articles during a time of desperation isn't a very compelling argument that it was actually some wide spread deeply held belief that would have been followed thru on.

Mechanization would have priced slavery out of business. Imagine what would have happened if they were told flatly, "I don't need you any more. Leave." No roof, no food.... Mass migration. Even worse - shipped back to Africa where they had no ties.
