Apple computers

5. I've never felt the need to know the behind the scenes workings (all those crazy Windows file extensions etc.) of my Mac OS. It just works and rarely crashes, runs slow etc.

This is one thing that can be irritating about using a Mac; if you ARE the kind of person that cares about the behind-the-scenes stuff, it can be frustrating how buried things are. For example, I had to find a little hack in order to figure out how to search for system files in Leopard so that I could go through and get rid of little files left behind by applications I've tried and then deleted. Apple's attitude about it is definitely along the lines of "Don't go in that folder!!"

Hm. Guess I haven't heard too much about Mac office compatibility.

I guess that pretty much leaves hardcore gamers who should buy a PC every day of the week over a Mac.

I still prefer Macs over Windows for video editing purposes. I've run high end Dells and used middle of the road Macs and the Macs outperformed them in just about every category. I use Adobe Premiere for my video editing. Not sure if that has any effect on the machines whatsoever.

Edit: High end Macs for video and sound editing... just wow is all i have to say.

Office for Mac is pretty good, considering. You can share files pretty much interchangeably between the PC and Mac versions. The big issue is that Microsoft has pulled VBA support from the latest Mac version of Office, which leaves business users who depend on custom VBA applications out of luck. Everybody else would be fine with a Mac, if that's what they want.

many pc users are simply too stubborn to look past their pc monitors and realize that macs are the best "personal computer" available and are leaps and bounds ahead of PCs when it comes to simplicity and innovation.

and some mac users are simply too arrogant and condescending to be taken seriously.

it's like they think they are better people than us because they own a mac. i don't get why microsoft is considered the devil for making billions, but apparently it's ok for apple to make billions a year. what is the difference? that and no one calls them on their anticompetitive actions when it comes to itunes. the fact is ipods are overpriced and not superior to other mp3 players, and their pcs are overpriced too (unless all you care about is your computer looking "cute" or something).

I am by no means an Apple snob. E-mail and web browsing is pretty well the same regardless of the operating system you're using. A computer is a tool, not a lifestyle choice. And yes, a lot of Apple's stupid marketing is based on pretending that it is.

Five years ago I would have been astonished at the idea of me ever using a Mac. I find myself typing on one right now for three reasons. First, the overall terrible quality of laptops in general nowadays. (I'm a laptop-only user now, so building my own machine is no longer an option. If you could build your own laptop, I'd probably still be using Windows and Linux.) Second, Apple's switch to Intel processors meant that there's no longer any risk to being locked into a particular OS -- if I want to play a Windows-only game, I just reboot, and now I have a blazing fast Windows laptop. The final and most important reason was that Apple decided to base its OS on Unix. The GUI is nice, of course, but at any time I can pop open a terminal shell and boom, there's UNIX. It's like having a Linux box without any of the configuration headaches of trying to get Linux to run on a laptop. And UNIX is bulletproof, of course.

The quasi-religious OS arguments have been boring ever since Windows was battling it out with OS/2. They're all just different tools for doing the same basic things. The one that's "best" depends on what your particular needs are.

E-mail and surfing the web?

EeePC by Asus for $300. :)

Anything more? I like the cheap Acers. The quality of build isn't fantastic, but they are so cheap in price if you get a year or two of use out of it (mine has been running strong for 4 years now) then you don't mind throwing it away for a new machine.

i typed that on a PC, hotshot. i dont own a mac, but i have actually done my homework on both and know what each brings to the table. there is no way you can deny that a mac is the best option for someone looking to purchase a personal computer.

I would not say a mac is the best choice for a personal computer. Lots of reasons why, some of which I've discussed. That in no way implies a mac is a bad choice, though. It's just personal preferrence nowdays, man.

I'd love to see one of those up close. Looks like they'll do 80% of what 80% of people use a computer for, and that that price they're practically disposable.

Back in the stone age of 1995 or so, when people were sitting around wondering whether Netscape would someday be able to knock off Microsoft (ha), this is the kind of thing they were thinking about -- a super-cheap computer that would boot right into the browser, and you'd run all your other applications out of that. Local storage would be minimal or nonexistent. The Eee reminds me of a lot of those conversations -- way too late for Netscape, I guess.

In particular, I remember predicting that "within 10 years, the concept of spending $100 or more on a piece of software just to let you turn on the computer and launch other software will be laughable." Oops.

true, gamers and business people would probably find a pc more practical, but as far as simplicity and the average joe, i still believe apple is the best choice.

I installed XP on my Eee. I was trying to put the installation on my SDHC card so I could still retain the Linux install as well... well, my SD card won't perform, so I'm going to stick with XP on the flash drive. It still boots in about 15 seconds, so that isn't too shabby. I'm very impressed with the build quality and performance for just $350 (I bought the 4G surf). I will probably give it a RAM upgrade in the near future since I'm running XP, and I probably should have gotten the 4G with the larger battery for just $50 more... but I'm happy with the purchase. If you have big hands it isn't the machine for you though... it is hard to type even with my little woman-like fingers. I'll upload some pics of mine with VN on the browser later.

I can deny your assertion all day long.
