The re-rank is a poll of all 128 FBS schools with a plus-minus column indicating how much each team has risen or dropped from USA TODAY's final ranking of last season.

Appalachian State is at No. 43, ahead of SEC schools Texas A&M (No. 46), Mississippi State (55), Kentucky (74), Vanderbilt (79), South Carolina (84) and Missouri (87).

The Mountaineers are also ahead of Tennessee's other non-conference FBS opponents, Virginia Tech (57) and Ohio (78).

Tennessee comes in at No. 12 in the poll, up 13 spots from last season.

Wait, vandy is higher than Missouri? I actually heard one of the sec guys last night say vandy was good and we'd struggle, but beat them.

That's crazy; no way they are better than Tx. a&m.

This is a poor job of ranking the teams. A&M would crush App State. Both Miss St and Va Tech would handle them fairly easily, as well. Kentucky would give them a good game, probably beat them. So they ought rightfully to be down just a place or three below Kentucky. Say, mid-70s.

Another case of writers seeing nothing but 2015 W/L totals and completely missing the strength of schedule gulfs involved.

I guess the theory behind Vandy being better this year is based on the fact that they can't be any worse based off of last season's offensive performances but I beg to differ they could be much worse. I trust that they will be imho.

What?!?!? There's no way we're better than A&M or Mississippi State. Yes, we went 11-2 last year and beat Ohio in the bowl game. No, we should not be ahead of either A&M or Mississippi State ... yet. If we can keep our coaches, we should improve some each year.

No offense to Appy State but thats stupid. No way Appy State beats TAM or Miss State this year for sure....and I'm not sure they beat the others either despite SCar, Missouri and Vandie being straight garbage.

I thought the same thing. Maybe better than Vandy,Kentucky and Missouri

I think they are definitely better than those 3 teams. I don't think we're just going to line up & push App State around all over the field like most people think. I do think we will win comfortable though. App State will score a late TD to make it look closer than it should. We win 38-16. Lamb(their QB) is a dangerous weapon guys.

He could start for at least half the SEC teams. He just don't have a lot of help around him in the passing game. He does for the rushing attack but not the passing game. We force them to throw the ball & we're going to get at least 2 INT's.

Maybe even one for a TD return. We pack the line to stop their run & force passing then App State is going to be in big trouble when they try to pass. Too many pure athletes back there in that secondary to pick him off or knock down passes.

App State is very weak at WR this season. They don't have a single WR thart can outrun or beat any of our secondary. They will only score by rushing or special teams to help them get into scoring position.

I'm saying 3 FG's out of the 16 points with that late TD making it the 16 points. We could score more than 38 but I think we miss one field goal & have a turnover in the red zone too.

I think a lot of teams get a lot of bang out of a real good returning experienced QB. Taylor Lamb will be highest rated QB we play in regular season. That could change if UGA;s freshman has a great year or who ever starts for Bama. We get a lot of juice in rankings for having the best dual threat experienced QB in the SEC. I still see A&M beating App rather easy but a lot of people are saying the chemistry with A&M's Oklahoma transfer QB is not meshing.

Shaedon Meadors is an exceptional WR and can outrun all sorts of folks. He was injured some last year which kept him off the field. Don't count our WR's out yet. My big question will be Taylor Lamb's abililty to check off quickly enough with UT breathing down his neck.

Our kicker is a redshirt freshman playing his first college game ever in Neyland of all places. I'm not seeing 3 FG's.

Regardless of the final score, it's football season! Life is good!

The talking heads said that last year too and we hung 53 on that "stout" defense.

7 or 14 of those points were off returns, so it wasn't quite that much but more than their average...

After Vandy played a bunch of crap SEC East offenses like FL, SC, and Mizzou last year...you are correct their defense was at least some overrated

I would bet Meadors couldn't outrun not one single DB we have on the roster. You do realize how good & deep of a secondary we have don't you? Picked as possibly the best in the entire country & definitely best in the SEC.

I'm sorry to hurt your feelings or burst your bubble but your Mountaineers ain't getting crap throwing the ball against our secondary. You'll might get a few yards rushing but no way passing the ball. I don't see App State getting over 100 yards passing. They might get 100+ rushing.

They won 11 games and have a great QB. I can't see the Vols covering the point spread.

Haven't heard that. That's a good thing for us though. Being a cancer in the locker room and on the field could be the reason he transferred from OU?
