'25 App State Transfer QB Joey Aguilar (Tennessee)

Think Aguilar got 1.5 mil but Merk also just received an undisclosed raise so not sure what that amount is. Either way, I just want Heupel to continue to play whomever gives us the best chance to win ball games.
It feels odd that we felt compelled to pay Aguilar $1.5 mil when we dont even know (for a fact) that he is the unquestioned starter. I don't know if it was a belief by him and his team that they had Tennessee over a barrel, or what, but who else was likely to pay him that kind of money at that time?

If that is the case, then I get it (I guess). Still not sure who was outbidding us at that point in the process, but if we knew we were bringing him in to start, then that is starting QB money.
That’s not how I operate my personal finances. I pay what I have to, not what I think it’s worth.

He will be the starter, but it is only fair to give the others the
opportunity with the expectation that it is Joey's to lose.

My guess is that Augilar will win the spot based on experience. You can't duplicate 7 guys coming after you after the snap with blood in their eyes. I would say the odds are 50-50 that either of the other 2 QB's ever see the field at UT as a starter. They will be made offers they can't refuse if they are any good. Once a starter is named it will be every man for himself.

I think Merk beats him out

because we were desperate. down to two qbs, neither with any real playing time. we had struck out on a couple, running out of time, and options, and might have overbid just to make sure it was a done deal.

they also reworked Merk's deal to give him more money. why do that if Joey having the starting job was a done deal and the coaches felt like he was a slam dunk?
Why Out of desperation do you a give a guy a million dollars just for the heck of it...unless, that is you aren't confident that either of the 2 you have on roster aren't ready. And I think thats what is going on. If JH was fully confident in Merk or Mac, you just go out and find a Gas Pipe for depth purposes.

1. He was making that much at UCLA so he could just stay there

2. He's actually a good QB

3. We didn't have any better options

4. Maybe the staff is not confident that Merk or GMac are ready just yet

Regarding #1, yes, he could have just stayed at UCLA, but he didn't. It's clear he wanted at least a shot at playing and I'd assume the second he hit the portal that his NIL deal with them was voided. Choosing to return there wouldn't have been near as profitable.

#2, I think that is still yet to be determined in the SEC.

#3 & 4, I agree were/are possibilities.

2 qbs isn't tenable. even if they had experience. and desperation is enough reason to give a guy a million plus.

we had two young guys, so another young guy with limited to no starts doesn't make sense. once you are shopping for someone with experience that already means you are going to be paying more money regardless of your own situation.

if JH was fully confident in Joey he wouldn't have paid Merk more. Joey is only going to have a couple months to get to know the team, and only fall practice to have anything resembling real experience with this offense. bringing in Joey is like bringing in Milton, you aren't sure what you got, so you bring in some more experience.

I’m sure this has been said before…IMO Aguilar raises the floor for the QB room, but doesn’t significantly raise the ceiling.

If Merk or GMac beat him out that’s great because they’ll have proved themselves against an experienced player, but if they don’t then he’s at least a quality starter in the SEC.

Sometimes you’ve got to pay a player to ensure you’re not awful.

I definitely agree you have to bring in a third guy. The point I'm trying to make, and this is purely speculation, it's just my opinion from the outside looking in. We brought in JA with the expectation that he is going to be the starter and that Merk isn't ready. It makes no sense to pay JA 1.5 mil to come here and sit the bench. I know Merk got a bump in pay and they had to do that to keep him from leaving. Going off the above, the plan is unchanged with him. He wasn't playing this year before Nico left and he's probably not going to this year either unless JA gets hurt or is completely awful. And remember with Milton, he wasn't just brought in for experience. He was brought in to be "the guy." JH hitched the wagon to him and only pulled the plug when he got hurt in the Pitt game. It just so worked out that Hooker took the job and never looked back. I think JH is gonna do the same with JA until there is not a reason to play him. Again, just my opinion.

I think they brought in Aquilar because we just saw what a freshman, higher ranked than the current two on our roster, can do against SEC competition. Without Sampson, we were a .500 team. The passing game was our weakness and we lost the ability to snap quickly. If we want to see the high-octane offense again we need to run multiple series at high speed. They are thinking maybe a more experienced, less athletic, QB can get them back to that point faster than a freshman.

I think @pierce60 said it best. I think JA was brought in to raise the floor of the quarterback room. JA gives some sort of base the coaches can depend on. with him the coaches get to try things out in the season. without him they would be stuck with a freshman and those ups and downs. JA at best raises some of those downs. its all a question of how fast/reliably can either of these guys hit their ceiling in this offense.

I have a suspicion that Heup is excited and is gonna let Joey sling it around! He gets that bawl out quick.

He'll have something dialed up for Cuse and it'll be unfortunate for them lol.

You could have done that by bringing back Gas Pipe for 200k. Why on earth would you spend 1.5 million to "raise the floor" of the QB room? Save that money and use it elsewhere if that's the case. If Merk was making more than JA I might could see the case for Merk being the the starter, but to pay a guy that much to come here for one season and never play is absurd. I think they've already explained to Merk that the plan hasn't changed. He was always going to backup this season, and that JA is only here one season. They gave him a bump in pay to keep him happy and he'll have a great shot to have the job in 2026.

You can come back and bump this in late August if JA isn't starting, and I'll gladly admit I was wrong. But I'll be shocked if he isn't taking the first snap against SU.

We needed a QB. It’s more than a 1 million discount over what we had. And you’re complaining?

Starting QBs aren’t cheap. Given the reports Nico got 1.5 from UCLA it would make sense if Aguilar was offered something similar to be their starter.

You can run a LOT of routes with your QB in 3 1/2 months
Of course you can. I’m not saying it’s an impossible task, but 3.5 months vs a full offseason presents an uphill battle relative to the QBs with a full or multiple offseasons in the same offense.
