App State Keeping It Close?

Clemson was by far the best team ap st. played last year and they lost by 31 points. UT was not as good as Clemson last year but we could have easily been competitive with them based on our performances last year against upper tier teams. Bottom line is Judge ap st on their performance against a team like Clemson and not their 2 point victory over the mighty Ohio Bobcats. The game will not close at all as long as we take care of business.

Yeah. Just like pundits saying Northwestern would keep it close.

Not even close to being a similar comparison. NW was ranked #13,they play in a power 5 conference and had Beaten Stanford earlier in the year. O guarantee the players didn't need much motivating to get ready for the bowl game.A top 15 opponent and playing in 80 degree weather. May be a tad bit harder to get players motivated to play Appy St. Especially with the Battle at Bristol going down next weekend. That is honestly my biggest concern..How motivated are the players and are they looking past an inferior opponent to next weekend? Ask Fulmer and the whole 2001 Football team what happens when you dont get up for an opponent and clearly had zero motivation after beating Spurrier and UF. But they are 18-22 year old kids and they aren't always easy to motivate and keep their focus. Luckily we have veteran leadership that won't allow it to happen. We could come out and win 50-0 or have to kick a last second FG and win 13-10. Truth is nobody knows till we get to that point. Or the unthinkable happens and we don't make it out of week one still undefeated. That happening is extremely slim but it's college football and you have a hundred and something 18-22 year old males..not exactly the most predicable group that we wanna put complete faith and trust in.

I'm curious to see how many of ya'll will start freaking out if Appalachian St. scores a touchdown on Shoop's defense.

Appy was #6 team in rushing last year, so they're going to score 2-3 TD's, and given that Tenn will keep it vanilla, we win by say 17pts... so don't y all freak out, this is really just a glorified scrimmage, the real season starts on the 24th....

I'm not freaking out unless the game ends and we see an 0-1 next to Tennessee..Then I may have a moment that I will have to go to confession after to get corrected. I'm already prepared for it being a relatively close final score and then if it's not I know our guys will have complete focus for the entire football year.

The game will be close in the first quarter and in the second our talent and depth will take over and we will put the motor in cruise control and win like 44-13.

Thank you..I have been saying that all week. No reason to freak out if Appy St holds the line and we Didn't embarrass them. I'm more than fine with a 14-17 point win and every player comes out of the game fully healthy. We have too many big games coming up soon and will be here before we know it and I don't wanna have to be in full heart attack mode the first game of the season against an opponent that shouldn't even have me break a sweat. Got too many of those games coming up in a few weeks. I plan on sitting back, watching my Vols and enjoying Vol time time with my 12 year old son. Couldn't ask for a better way to spend a Thursday night. GBO

That means our run defense needs work then. Their pass game is suspect correct?

They don't put up tons of passing yards buuuut their QB did throw 2x as many TD passes as Dobbs did. So they can chuck it a little bit.

I can guarantee you these guys are motivated and focused. It's been 8 months since they have played meaningful football, and for many of the new freshmen they have yet to take an official snap in Neyland stadium.

These guys are hungry to hit someone for real and to show what they can do. There is no way they are not excited to get on that field tonight and play meaningful football. They won't be flat. They will be amped up and energized. Besides, it's not like VA Tech is FSU, OSU, or Clemson. It's a big game, but not one that would make it so easy to overlook a season opener.

Agree, I just hope Butch resists the temptation to run the score up, and empties the bench... if Butch is smart, he shows little as possible till the 24th, so it may be frustrating to fans expecting blowouts.

The 247 composite for all 128 FBS 2016 teams have been updated and we have the 12th most talented team in the country, boasting 39 blue chippers and 38 3-stars. Appalachian State claims the 119th position for talent ranking with no blue chip players at all and, according to the 247 composite, only three 3 star players on their roster. If indeed the game is mostly about the jimmies and joes, this game should not be close. If it is, star gazers every where will experience a severe crisis of faith.

App State is an experienced 2 star team. They are well disciplined and well coached. We have the 3rd most experience team in the country and I don't think too many people will question the discipline of our team. Do you think they have better coaching that our guys? I don't.

Did we watch the same game? NW got manhandled and it wasn't even close. The interception came with all the backups in and NW still trying to score.

Some people have no ability to valuate football teams. Looks like we have run into good football game. Dobbs just threw what should have been intercepted.

You got your wish.....Butch is holding back on the scoring. We don't want to tip our hand too much. :thud:
