Unlike the past two seasons, when USC started the season as an overwhelming No. 1, the Buckeyes received 54 percent of the first-place votes, and all the teams in the top six received at least three votes for No. 1. Notre Dame had 10 first-place votes, Texas eight, West Virginia six and Auburn and USC three.

I wish Cal had been ranked higher. After looking at their season last year, their losses, their own uncertainty at QB, etc... this could be a good opportunity for the Vols to make up some ground if they can pick up a good W.

amazing that USC can basically lose all their offense and still be top 6

they are loaded with talent they have recruited and have great coaching. IMO wont win the pac-10 this year or finish top 10.

Oklahoma is going to struggle early to replace their QB too.

Seems like a good opportunity this year for an SEC team to win the national championship. The perennial favorites in the Big 12 and Pac-10 are rebuilding. Maybe a Big 10 team.

Wow, we're ranked in the AP too? Amazing. :good!:

I love the benefit of the doubt.

I know USC has a lot of talent but they lost a lot of playing experience......on the field leadership! How are the younger guys going to react to tough situations, thats going to be the difference for them.

The same way the guys after Carson Palmer and Mike Williams responded, I guess.

After we take the W against Cal, we should swap spots in the rankings.
Unless it is a significant margin, UT probably won't even pass them. One of the things I hate about human polls. The voters don't like to admit their wrong and very often leave one team ranked above a team that has beaten them.

bammers will be crying

did this come out after Cal's CB got injured?

I believe it was released after the injury, but I'm sure most, if not all, of the votes had been in for a day or two. I would highly doubt any voters had time to change a vote. Also, considering how bad the AP can be at time, they probably didn't care about the injury.

#23 is good considering we were 5-6.Apparently they feel we did in fact give away games last year.

I like the ranking also. This reminds me a lot of 98. I'm not saying we will win a NC but I beleive we will shock a lot of people and be in the top ten before the end of Sep.

I love flying under the radar.

I like the 23 spot as well, just barely ranked.

Shows the program still warrants a reasonable amount of national respect but shouldn't over-inflate any egos.

I would agree that a 3-0 record should get us to the door of the top 10, if not in.

I really don't understand how WVU is so high..Yes they have some amazing talent, but I dont see them as a #1 team, not even top 5 IMO.

They get lots of votes from the East Coast media due to the conference that WVU particpates in. WVU should go undefeated this year.

West Virginia will be like Louisville last year... they'll slip up and lose two or three games.

Perhaps. Going into it though the only game that should be circled on their schedule is Louisville. You can't really say that about any of the other Top 5 teams.

West Virginia was a top 5 team just a couple of years ago, but they disappointed big time. I think this year's team is better, but they could easily screw it up again. South Florida or Louisville might be able to trip them up. There will be some controversy if a team like LSU or Auburn finishes with 1 loss and don't get a spot in the BCS championship, but an undefeated WV team does. The Big East is going to have to take some steps to gain more credibility or else their teams will always be considered as the beneficiaries of soft schedules.
