the fact that both Illinois and Arizona State are both ranked is a joke. Fresno shouldn't have fell out because they lost to a top 10 team by 3 points. give me a break

Not a Bama fan although I respect them more than Florida....Bama should be above Texas..maybe higher. I'd say they'd give Florida a very hard time.

I understand that we've played horribly to date, but behind KY in votes? They held on for life against freaking MTSU.

UK is 3-0. We're 1-1.

They barely beat a bad team. We barely lost to a bad team.

And by the way, this is not the AP Poll. In the AP poll, we did get more votes than UK and Vandy.

I don't care if KY is 47-0, they haven't beaten anyone worth playing and got all they wanted from MTSU.

we simply have more talent.

who had we beaten in week 1 to warrant being 18th? Neither team has proven anything beyond that point. KY has beaten three HS teams. UT has beaten one and lost to one.

You're not making a compelling case for the Vols to be ranked ahead of Kentucky.

Dunno what the big deal is about rankings. It's weekend 3, nobody's played anybody (except USC/O$U). And the bottom line is- no matter how many votes they got, neither UK nor Tennessee are ranked.

That's not the issue. Does BYU really have more talent than Oregon, Bama, Ohio State, Wake Forest, or WVU?

Rankings boils down to W's and L's. Kentucky has 2 more than we do and didn't lose to any of the high school teams they played. We did lose to one. Are we better than UK? Probably. But I honestly think we're also better than Illinois, Utah, Kansas, Wake Forest, East Carolina, Oregon...hell, maybe Auburn and Alabama too. But we're not ranked ahead of them because we haven't done anything besides lay an egg on national TV and beat up on hapless UAB.

So, at this point, we deserve to be ranked behind Kentucky. Talent is useless if nothing is done with it.

Edit: For the record, I agree with Brian that rankings are basically worthless at this point. But there seemed to be so many people in shock that we were barely ahead of Vandy and behind Kentucky. It shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Yeah, the original poster had the USA Today poll instead of the AP poll (duh).

In the 'correct' AP poll, Vandy is ahead of the Vols. (no suicides please)

I would say by virtue of their weak SOS and getting slaughtered by Georgia, such a ranking would be inconceivable.

Naturally, there are exceptions to every rule. LSU, Georgia, Southern Cal, and Missouri all finished ahead of a couple of 1-loss teams in KU and Hawaii. But there was good reason, as their SOS was much better, and in the case of Mizzou and UGA, they were the ones who delivered those sole losses to those teams.

Of course, Tennessee fans should know that getting beat (or beating a team, in fact) does not guarantee you will finish higher or lower than they. See: Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Cal.

you're right. There's not one good reason and that's a resounding condemnation our our current staff.

I'm not much on early polls.

If we beat the 4 (YES 4) teams in the top 10 that are on our schedule, our ranking will take care of itself. No cake walk with a new OC and (seemingly) newer QB.

That brings up an interesting point...what is a reasonable expectation for those 4 games in particular?

Friggin win. Atleast 3 of them. We have the ability... not by any means saying we will do it.
