AP feels like Steele still in fold for DC

If he has a mitigation clause he can't do that. They force you to seek equal employment. Arkansas is suing Bret Beliema over his purposely avoiding pay while coaching the Patriots.

He can work for TN and submit applications for P-5 DC jobs. It’s not a slam dunk that a fired DC is going to land at another P-5 as a DC. As long as he throws his hat in the ring for openings he should be compliant with the terms of his Auburn buyout. He could be sitting at home not working right now (had he not taken the TN job) and Auburn would be on the hook for another $450k/year.

If you take a job for less pay but are doing a different job you'll end up sued is what I'm saying. You mentioned letting him be the DC but giving him a position coach payment. That said, I'm not sure he has a mitigation clause. I don't think Gus did.

You mean you can’t be a former SEC head coach taking millions in a buyout and go be an analyst for Saban at $35k/year?

As long as Steele is available for any DC opening then he should be fine. He wasn’t hired as TN’s DC. Auburn could litigate and they’d lose. Plus they’d damage their attractiveness as an employer.

Probably working on the contract and legalities, job title.
Not sure how well CJH knows Steele, personality wise. CJH did say he needed someone he trusted to run the defense.
But the longer he stays around, more likely he stays. 🤷🏼

Agreed. It just seems like such a no brainer.

a.) He's a proven commodity. Been a DC for many years and has fielded some very good defenses.
b.) He's a solid recruiter with SEC ties. Something this staff is desperately going to need.
c.) He's a Tennessee guy. Having more Tennessee blood on the staff is never a bad thing IMO.
d.) He's already used to being a DC under a head coach who runs an up tempo offense
e.) Keeping Steele increases the chances of Rodney Garner joining the staff which I like very much!
Too much sense so he is probably gone!

$425 k per is mitigating. It’s not mandated that you demand $2.5 mil at your next gig.

No you won’t. Cite an example! When Charlton Warren and Larry Scott hired on at Florida, we were in hock for half their compensation. You hire on to be a LB’s coach for $425 per and save Auburn $900 k? They’ll send a thank you letter. No way they jump into a court that’ll laugh em back out! There’s a reason we didn’t sue Butch for laying up 3 seasons for $30,000 non-winner. You end up adding damages and court costs to the bill. Arkansas will end up submitting that to accounting.

His defense gave up 70 to Wet Virginia while at Clemson and got him fired. For one game while at Auburn his defense made a Tennessee Qb named Guarantono look like Peyton Manning...go figure

That would be a smart move by JH. Get rid of a nationally known recruiter and replace him with a no name up in comer.
The smart move would be to hire UTM Coach Jason Simpson for Qb coach. He can bring his son and has a son behind him that many think will be better. He’s a damn good Qb developer as well.

Says the longer this drags out the more he feels like Steele could be the DC
I think it would be inconsiderate of JH toward UT and their financial situation to dismiss Steele and have to pay him for his salary which I believe was about $950,000. He could be a valuable asset on the defensive side.

I'm not going to make JH account for Phillip Fulmer and Donde Plowman's poor economic decisions. He can hire whoever he wants. I would like for Steele to remain, but if they toss him to the curb because he (1) tried to snake Malzahn's job and can't be trusted; (2) just is a bad fit; or (3) doesn't really seem committed to being here, well, I'm not going to blame JH for not considering UT's poor mismanaged budget.

If he is seen as purposely taking less pay than market value he's likely to end up sued like Bieliema was sued by Arkansas.

$2 mil isn’t standard market value for a DC...definitely not for a LBs coach. Bieliema was making $60 k with the Patriots...night and day.
