Anyone watching Nico tonight?

Well one thing is for sure. Papa Nico is not going to take any ownership for any of this laundry list of screw-ups and bad decisions. I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with some kind of statement blaming UT for him being so bad.
Papa Nico: “Get Joel Klatt on the phone…”

Good grief that article was a gigantic crock of ****, what a puff-piece pile of trash. That "journalist" should be ashamed of himself for penning that nauseating diatribe.
LMAO! You're right!!!

That was one of the most cringe inducing puff pieces I've ever read. Guys entering his 3rd year playing FBS football and the article quotes his old HS coaches telling anecdota stories while posting photos from Nico's HS playing days.

It was written before the game.

UCLA plays 2-0 UNLV this upcoming weekend, and a win is nowhere near a certainty. If he performs poorly and loses that game, the wheels likely come off the UCLA bus.

We should send Nico's father a thank you note for getting him out of Tennessee. I almost feel sorry for him getting bad advice from father and other adults. Still, I don't want to see him be any better than mediocre since I think he sort of dumped on UT, and I don't think he will be any better from what I have seen.
Used to travel to Cal for work about 15 to 20 years ago, mostly San Diego which I liked then, a couple times to LA, didn't care that much for LA. San Fran was nice when I was there around 40 years ago, but I understand it is much worse now. Sounds like the state has gone downhill lately.
The stench of sewage was everywhere the last time I was there a few years ago.

Just noticed watching the highlights. Utah's fans sounded louder... like maybe they took over.
They're kind of like an Ivy football fan base. Not a lot of juice for the sport. More of a nothing better to do social gathering type deal. Friends and family thing. No idea what Nico and his clan were thinking, but hey, both sons are at the same school and it's home for them so I guess it works best for them. Just one game, but right now I'm pretty happy with the trade. Still can't believe how Aguilar looked. For him to look that way after a couple of months screams volumes about Nicos ability to process. Think NFL scouts are going to have some concerns/questions? I sure would.

They really thought they had Tennessee in a barrel & would be forced to pay up. Reality was Heupel saw this guy wasn’t getting it & decided to move on.
Not sure Heupel knew Aguilar would fall to him or how he'd adjust to the change, but I do agree he was more than willing to roll with Merk/Mac rather than continue dealing with Nico and his family. Yet another huge red flag for an NFL team evaluating team Nico.

Yeah UNLV is gonna beat them IMO. Dan Mullen coaches at UNLV and they are a fundamentally sound football team. UCLA is not. They looked lost on both sides of the ball vs an unranked Utah team that lost a bunch of talent from last year.

I havent looked at UCLAs schedule but they are gonna really struggle unless they only play the very worst teams in the Big10. Sadly half that conference couldnt beat Vandy on a year to year basis. So the 4 best schools OSU, UM, PSU, and OR can easily run the table except when they play eachother. 10-2 and a playoff berth is WAY easier up there than in the SEC.

Penn St, Nebraska and Washington at home. MI State, Indiana and OSU on the road. Then USC. That could be 7 more losses. If they lose to UNLV there is a high probability of 5-7 at best.

Hope they have a Plan B.

After New Mexico, they might not be favored in another game.

I’m bumping this against my better judgement, as I don’t like pouring on a kid that is already down, but here is my Nico nugget.

This is 3rd hand, so TIFWIW. Golesh sent a text to Heupel after visiting Nico for a game after the ink had dried on the $8 mil contract that said “We’re f*****…”

Dump on me if you must, but if my memory serves me correctly Nico only started his junior and senior year(but 7 on 7 camps? Shew mercy!), couldn’t beat out Milton, Heupel pulled the reins in the Oklahoma game last year and did not run as much tempo throughout the season as the year with HH. Nico was 19% on passes of 20 yards or more.

Personal opinion, when Nico held out, Heupel saw it as an opportunity.

Ok, imma go bathe now.

Sorry if the text thing has been discussed. I’ve been off the boards since January, but am slowly creeping back in.

Once the play for a raise/more help out of the Portal fell through, getting Nico to a place like UCLA was actually probably the point.

Nico's camp isn't really interested in team success, and probably isn't even interested in him putting up big numbers. The strategy at this point very well could be getting him to put impressive throws on tape in a lower pressure environment and then preparing for the combine, where he likely will impress NFL scouts because he does have legit arm talent.

The initial play for more money came back in December iirc. Nico should have quit at that time allowing UT to shop for better options instead of the spring. He simply wasn't worth the additional money based on his performance. It was a bish move by Nico and his camp because the defection was premeditated to hurt the program. No insider info but it sure as heck seemed that way. Nico along with his handlers should have thanked UT for overpaying him.

Thankfully, Joey was available for Heupel to bring on board even with limited options in the portal. It would be so damn sweet if Joey is able to have a really nice season and UT comes out on top after this whole fiasco. As always, GBO!!!

I don't think it was a premeditated effort to hurt the program; I just think Nico's camp is dumb and has no self-awareness. They think he is way better than he actually is, hence the demands they were making and why he left after Spring ball (I think they believed he'd have a lot of suitors). If they didn't get the message simply from how he played in 2024, they should have had a good idea of what the market for him was given that they supposedly reached out to Oregon, Miami, and perhaps others in late 2024/early 2025 and was told "thanks but no thanks."

After that, I think they shifted strategy. He's making less NIL money, but he's also back home in a lower pressure environment as the unquestioned starter. If he remained at Tennessee and played like he did against Utah, he would probably eventually be benched for Merk or GMac. He'll still put some impressive throws on tape and will almost certainly impress scouts at the combine, which is all about arm talent and other measurables. Even if he struggles a lot this year, I bet he'll be drafted higher than you'd think.
