Anyone notice how weird our schedule is next year?

8 wins unless we "portalize" that Defense. Don't sleep on SC and LSU. Beamer and Kelly will have their teams ready next year. SC has made some serious use of the portal already.

Our first four games, 2 scrubs and 2 P5’s, including opening SEC play Florida. None of this is unusual.

Ball State
Pitt
Akron
Florida

Then we get a really early bye week, week 5.

Then we go straight to our 2 west opponents back to back, LSU and Bama, then we randomly get another mid-season scrub (UT Martin).

LSU
Bama
UT Martin

After all that, then we finally start playing the rest of the East.

Kentucky
Georgia
Mizzou
South Carolina
Vandy

So in the first 8 weeks, we play one opponent from our division, then play all the rest of them in our last 5 weeks. Our final scrub game is October 22nd, and we get a really early bye. Probably the weirdest schedule I’ve seen in a long time, but honestly, I don’t love the way it’s laid out. Our easiest SEC games all come at the end of the season when injuries have set in.

They remember what you do in November. We used to finish with Memphis State or the like, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Vandy back in the 70's and 80's. CJM made a lot of hay during November. Rather than injuries setting in, I'd rather think experience sets in. The freshmen aren't freshmen anymore and there's some semblance of depth. I'd rather play Florida in November than the first SEC game of the year.

Texas A&M will be our West team in 2023 so we will get them just as they are ascending to be Alabama’s number 1 contender. We consistently get the West’s 2nd best team in addition to Alabama.
We played Aub in 18 and Miss St in 19. They both had 3-5 SEC records. That's quite a stretch saying they were the 2nd best team in the West. And you believe LSU will finish 2nd? I'll take that bet.

Over the past 10 seasons, these are the teams we have played from the West. Each team’s ranking at the time we played them is in front, with their finish in the West in parentheses:

2011: #1 LSU (1st), #2 Alabama (2nd), #8 Arkansas (3rd)

2012: #19 Mississippi St (4th), #1 Alabama (1st)

2013: #1 Alabama (2nd), #9 Auburn (1st)

2014: #3 Ole Miss (3rd), #4 Alabama (1st)

2015: UR Arkansas (3rd), #8 Alabama (1st)

2016: #8 Texas A&M (4th), #1 Alabama (1st)

2017: #20 LSU (3rd), #1 Alabama (2nd)

2018: #21 Auburn (4th), #1 Alabama (1st)

2019: UR Mississippi St (5th), #1 Alabama (2nd)

2020: #2 Alabama (1st), UR Arkansas (6th), #21 Auburn (3rd), #5 Texas A&M (2nd)

2021: #13 Ole Miss (2nd), #4 Alabama (1st)

4 out of 10 years we have had to play the top 2 teams from the West. 7 out of 10 years we have had to play at least 2 of the top 3 teams. 2 years we played the entire top 3 in the West.

It's statistically absurd how we always get teams at their peak. Ole Miss being one of the crazier examples. They were good in 2014 and 2015. Then they were bad for like 5 years. They were good again in 2021. We played them in 2014 and 2021. So they were only good for 3 out of those 8 years, and we played them in 2 out of those 3 good years.

Let’s not forget our out of conference luck either. We got 2010 Oregon who went on to play for the Natty, 2013 Marcus Mariota Oregon who went 11-2, Baker Mayfield Oklahoma who made the playoffs, and magically a 2020 6-5 Pitt team became a 2021 11-3 Pitt team with a Heisman finalist.

It’s pretty absurd.

Look back at the Fulmer years. There was a reason we were usually undefeated in November.

If we can pull together a defense that can actually stop our opponents offense, we will do well against whoever we play. I'm confident in our ability to score 20-30 points a game against anyone. I am equally confident that we will allow 3-4 teams to score over 30 points. And that is all predicated on the offense repeating the progress and gains from 2021.

I noticed Tennessee plays Georgia the week after Georgia plays Florida. Interesting
