And you are a class act. I'll tell my buddies I talked to an old, senile Sigma Chi online. They'll at least get a kick out of this conversation.

cant we just get along frat or no frat. we both root for the Big Orange. If any of you were in the swamp and needed help from fellow Vol, what would it matter. The brotherhood would have already started. Peace my friends.Go Big Orange!!!

Here's something you might find amusing. I have a couple of good friends from high school who are in Sigma Chi here at our university. We've had this conversation several times. The funny thing is they handle themselves with much more class than you, and they're 21 years old. And you, at 37 years, can't handle yourself tastefully at all.

If you have friends who are Greek, you shouldn't lump all fraternity brothers into some elitist group that is hellbent on hazing, stealing money from its members, and generally being immature.

again please get along. who cares about who you bought as a friend, who you have as a friend, and how you obtained that friend. lets all get along here because, in a sense this is a fraternity of vol fans and socially fun to talk to one another. As long as your nice, study hard for your degree, work hard to be a good citizen, then who cares. I love you all big orangers. Its sounds gay, but we have a certain comraderie here that cant be matched. please get along. Happy Hollidays.

He didn't start bashing fraternities without being provoked. This is a real problem at UT. I can't understand all the negative attitude toward fraternities there. Although they only comprise about 10% (likely less, as I'm sure it's declined since I was there) of the student body, they always seem to pretty much run student government. Still, the general attitude toward Greeks is that they care only about themselves and their brothers/sisters.

As far as the money thing, it really is cheaper to live in a fraternity house and pay fraternity dues than to rent an apartment in Knoxville. Also, you are eligible for fraternity scholarships, which are more likely to receive since the applicant pool is significantly smaller. I know a couple of guys that never had to pay dues or rent because of the scholarships they received.

As far as excluding non-members, our parties used to be open to all, but that just resulted in the looting of our house or an all out brawl going down in the middle of the party. Thus, we limited non-members to girls and those included on a guest list. So pretty much, if you were a female or a friend of a brother, you were welcome. I think that's a fairly standard criteria for admissions at quite a few non-Greek parties.

I don't consider the people I graduated with from UTK to be part of my brotherhood. If I needed help in the Swamp, it would generally mean that I did something worth getting my *ss kicked for. I would assume the same goes for any other visiting fan in a hostile environment, and therefore, you guys would be on your own.

Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting at frat parties with hot classy chicks all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

The thing that I enjoy most is the way " GDI's " think that by telling a guy in a fraternity that he has to pay for his friends and then actually thinks that makes that guy feel bad is amusing. Yes I guess in a way we "pay for our friends" but however lets look at where this money goes: Paying for the fraternity house so you have a place to party and trash and never have to clean after pledging, band parties after football games (Which are awesome and too bad most GDI's don't get to seem them), Mixers, random parties during the week just for the fact of we are in college and we can and a lot of others things. Yeah I knew many GDI's and yes I know yall have parties but no matter what you say you're GDI parties that happen once a month are no where near as big as fraternity parties. Plus it is a lot more fun when you party with a bunch of friends you know then at some apartment/house in the Fort where you might know some of the people there but the majority just came b/c they heard it was a GDI party so therefore anyone with 5 bucks can get in. So yeah to sum everything up if you want to say fraternity guys pay for there friends go ahead but let me tell you it is well worth it if you have the money and aren’t afraid to pledge (Not saying that pledging is scary just that at most fraternities it does take a lot of work but it does make you respect it a lot more rather that just signing you name and BAM you are in like in a Club) no matter you think.

I lived in a frat house during the glory days of the mid 90s. I'm sure it has changed some, but from what I remember, this is how it broke down to "buy my friends."
To live in the house cost somewhere between $1200 and $1500 a semester. Pretty steep just for a few parties and the right to wear a t-shirt about said party. But take off the "hater" glasses and take a look at it next to your "GDI" lifestyle.

-Included in our $1500/semester dues are:
-lodging
-meal plan (lunch and dinner M-F)
-utilities
-parking on campus
-parties with hot, classy chicks
-knowledge of secret handshakes
-uncountable hilarious stories from living in a house w/ approx. 40 guys, of which, at least one is hammered at all times

Somebody that didn't live in a frat might need to help me out with this, but I figured that I'd give it a go
GDI Lifestyle:
-Apartment (w/ a roommate) - Approximately $400/mo. or $1,200 per semester
- lunch and dinner during week -say $7 a day x 5 days x 12 weeks -$420
-utilities (splitting with roommate) - $200 per semester
-on campus parking (+tickets) - $100
-cover charges for parties in fort and on strip - $100

I may have incorrect assumptions on the costs of the GDI lifestyle, so someone please feel free to correct me. Bottom line is that telling me that I paid for my friends doesn't hurt my feelings or make them any less of my friends. Most of the guys that I still run with today were in my frat. Others that were in my frat, I could care less if I see them again. No differnt than you joining the band or spanish club or whatever it was you did outside of the classroom to be a part of something.
