Clausen was very good, but he had the misfortune of following 3 absolute freaks at the QB position and I think expectations got a little out of whack.

Plus, the fact that we let Matt Mauck, an unproven redshirt freshmen, run all over our defense. That's the most frustrating game I've ever had to endure in the last 15 years! :banghead2:

If you're talking talent, maybe I could agree with this.

However, Clausen was a gamer - he proved that time & time again (especially on the road). Won twice at Gainesville, won at Miami, at Bama, at ND, etc. etc.

Simms choked hard in his biggest game 2001 Big 12 CG vs Colorado. 3 intercepions & a fumble in the 1st half. This is against a team that Texas beat 41-7 in the regular season. Keep in mind that Texas was only playing for a spot in the BCS National Championship to play Miami in the Rose Bowl.

I agree that Casey won ugly, but he won a lot. There were very few games (only 2 by my count) lost that could be blamed solely on Casey's performance.

Recap of games lost while Casey was the starter:

2004 Peach Bowl - Casey was the only guy I remember that played with any heart. Clemson embarrassed our D. Banks suspended for 1st half.

2003 UGA - Clausen & Troy Fleming bobble the exchange results in a 14 point swing right before halftime. Maybe Casey's fault, but not 100%.

2003 Auburn - Cadillac & Ronnie Brown ran wild. Casey almost brought us back at the end. (only regular season road loss).

2003 Peach Bowl. A blowout - appeared no Vols showed up for this one.

2002 Miami - Not even a contest, hard to blame on 1 player

2002 Bama - another 1 you can blame on Casey (3 picks) but it was his 1st game back from shoulder injury.

2002 UGA - Clausen did not play.

2002 Florida - OK, here is a game that you can pin on Casey (fumbled snaps), but coaches fault for not preparing for rain.

2001 SECCG - pin this one on turnovers (Stallworth, Stephens) & Chavis letting Matt Mauck run wild on our D. No adjustments after Davey was knocked out.

2001 Georgia - Hobnail boot game...should have been a W....blame it on special teams.

2001 Cotton Bowl - KSU dominated Vols. Special Teams & D let us down.

2000 - won every game he started (6-0). Bama, SC, Memphis, Arky, KY, Vandy

I had forgotten about that. Didn't he fumble about 7 times and lose 3 or 4 of them? I remember the look on Randy Sanders' face as he realized it didn't even matter what play he called because we couldn't snap the football.

Hindsight is 20/20. Chris made is own destiny and it was not a good one at TX or every team he's played for since then.

I doubt anybody would disagree with that . . . but QB play was the least of the problems against LSU in the SECCG.

Not a single one of any importance with Sims at quarterback. The most important touchdown pass he threw for Texsucks was to Teddy Lehman.

I don't understand why a QB that went 14-1 on the road in the SEC gets crap from that fan base ..... 14-1 is good right???

... and on top of that he was from California. You're right about the bias against non-southern QB! I didn't always like his "California attitude" but give him his due. Not only did he win, but he left it all on the field. He was a tough sun of a gun.

Chris was hanging by a thread with the Titans and he's probably blown it all. His little arrest in NYC a few weeks back, with his wife in the car, and he said he'd been smoking pot. He then tried to change it to cigarettes even though he was stoned.

Clausen was tough as nails on the road. Simms seemed rather timid. OU used to eat his lunch. He would have had better weapons here but he would have seen defenses like OU all year. Clausen lead offenses were never really a thing of beauty, 2001 at times, a comedy of errors at other times, drove me nuts.

Nice information. You must write notes after every game I assume? I liked Clausen because that is what we had. I'm a Vol in any kind of weather. :)
