Anyone else excited about Smith moving to LB?

I guess you didn't see him do anything special, Jacques attended and played at Ooltewah High School?:banghead2:

Sorry guys I live in Chattanooga and worked at Baylor for his senior year. I walked the track at every home game and I never saw him do anything special at the high school level. I think he is an average player at best. That being said PROVE ME WRONG Jacques. Make me eat my words and blow every offense you see off the field and get 15 sacks. Go Vols

there is no question the guy has a very impressive build, no homo. I saw him up close at the orange and white game last year...he is a hell of a specimen... freakin huge and chiseled. here is to.. hoping he lives up to some of his hype at LB and leaves his mark at Tennessee.

I think its worth a try. Letting him come from different angles and out of a stance may increase his productivity.

It's more than worth a try. He needs a fresh start, and we need the bodies there. He can be successful at LB. Time to see the results.

Ed Orgeron and whoever else was behind all of the shirt ripping antics....were homo's.

He struggles because he just goes out there & does his own thing & says to hell with his assignment. It won't matter where he plays as long as he's playing back yard ball. Isn't this about the millionth thread about a 3-4 defense? Hope we go to a 1-5-5 but it won't matter if you can't stay in position & get off blocks & make a tackle.

That's why I'm hoping it will spark some motivation for him.

He was a fresh and soph and people were expecting him to compete at an all SEC level. Just doesn't happen very often - not sure why people rip him so much

I didn't mean to sound like I was hating on him. I am rooting for him and hope he reaches his full potential. Since he is from Tennessee, I pull for him even more. VFL!

If he doesn't have it upstairs in his head, he will fail miserably as a LB. I think Smith is one that has great physical ability but is a bit behind in the mental arena. LB will need to recognize, think, and react quickly or the offenses will eat him up. At DE its more just a physical game. My vote is keep him at DE where he belongs.

It has nothing to do with the mental aspect. Does fine in school. A lot better than our star quarterback or half our team for that matter.

It has more to do with him being undersized. He's probably closer to 6'2. he always goes 100 miles an hour to try to make up for that and it has cost due to over pursuing. for the record Bama never recruited him as a DE. he's always been a tweener.

Disagree. There is a mental piece that is outside of acedemic smarts. Smith may be a straight A student. Football smarts or instincts is the mental piece I'm refering to. A huge part of the game. I agree with other posters that he hustles and goes 100 mph but he needs to use his head out there and frankly I have yet to see it. At LB, mental mistakes will KILL you when you are covering downfield. Mental mistakes at the line, while not good either, can be more easily covered by someone else behind you. That's why I think he belongs on the line.

He's not a bust, he was 2nd in TFL last year behind Malik as a sophomore, give him two more seasons before you start with the "bust" comments.

All while playing in a system that didn't play to his strengths. (One of the least aggressive schemes I've seen in years.)

Sure - I'm sure you have evidence that it's mental mistakes and he's not very smart. It's clear he just over plays it. He whiffed on the read option like 5 times last year by running full speed looking to kill someone and missing by an inch. Being 6'2 255 the guy probably gets pancaked if he sits back half the time due to being undersized. Probably all he can do to avoid from that happening.

I am as excited about this position move as I was when Dooley took our best route runner as a freshman and made him a below average corner; took an all sec corner and made him a below average safety; made a left handed guard play center right handed; took our backup running back out of the rotation and gave him limited touches at the slot; and kicked our best defensive player off the team for smoking pot.

Me angry.

Evidence is shown on the field whenever he plays. Others see what I see as well but apparently you just see what you want to see. I think he belongs at DE and get someone else to play LB.
