I have a feeling he will be playing multiple roles... DL and LB...

OH, and you didn't add the proverbial (no homo) to that post. It did deserve it, IMO.

This is the first time I'm hearing about such a move :).

And your post is TOTALLY homo btw. Thanks for acknowledging, and not denying such a thing. Proves to me that you keep it real :good!:.

I'm stoked about him possibly moving to 3-4 OLB. He has the ideal skill set to make the transition pay off in a big way. It's been a rough year for J. Smith. He definitely hasn't done much being a DE in the 4-3. So maybe he will be more comfortable in the 3-4 and truly reach his potential. With him being a superb athlete, I can't understand why he has struggled as much as he has. So if the coaches do switch him to OLB maybe that will create some extra motivation for him.

He struggles because he just goes out there & does his own thing & says to hell with his assignment. It won't matter where he plays as long as he's playing back yard ball. Isn't this about the millionth thread about a 3-4 defense? Hope we go to a 1-5-5 but it won't matter if you can't stay in position & get off blocks & make a tackle.

I'm sure the hell am!! I played against him in a passing league scrimmige whenever, he played at Ooltewah high as a sophmore, I was a senior. I played lineback at East Ridge high but, even tho he played Defensive End, he was all over the place. It wont take him long to adjust. He's a beast!!!

He was a fresh and soph and people were expecting him to compete at an all SEC level. Just doesn't happen very often - not sure why people rip him so much

This, if you look at Bama and LSU's rosters for the NCG, you will notice that the bulk of their starters were Juniors and Seniors. Contrast that to Smith and most of UTs starters this past year, and you have a large part of the answer as to why UT struggled so much this past year. Experience means a lot in this league as does an opportunity to physically develop.

Maybe the new coach can motivate him to play his assignment. You have to play as a team, not as a free lancer--unless that is your assignment.

Another related note to what you said is if you have talented and experienced players around you, they can help minimize the results of mistakes you make.

If Smith missed assignments and didn't play particularly well as a DE, why do you think he's going to be better at LB? He'll have to learn a new position, for starters. Second, there are two keys to being a good LB--reading a play quickly so that you can start moving before a blocker can lock onto you, and then having the skills set (speed, athleticism, size) to get to the ball and make the tackle. The second without the first doesn't get you much.

Yes, I am excited for a fresh start for Jacques. I hope he can have a monster year and perform well enough to declare for the NFL draft next January.

i have to agree with armchair. expecting this kid to hop to LB and compete seems to be a bit of a tall order. he might be a good LB, but how long will it take to learn a very difficult position?

Doesn't matter. Bassman said JS hates DD and nobody wants to play for him anyway. Can't wait to ask him about that.
