Memphis fan here - as the name states, I come in peace. Most of my family are UT fans and many friends. My degree says Memphis on it and I am a Memphis fan.
I've seen a lot of names thrown around but I wanted to offer what insight I had regarding Fuente - I know he's not your first choice but is on at least some of your lists.
I had a good amount of access to Fuente, particularly in his first couple of years at Memphis including some one on one conversations.
The best way I can describe Fuente is "a cerebral introvert." He has a great mind for tactics and fundamental (executing in practice like you do in a game).
This is both a blessing and a curse as he is not the best recruiter, but he can coach up and develop the best of them, particularly on offense. His attention to detail also helps him on the recruiting trail when assessing talent.
I think Fuente to Knoxville will be a tall order - it has nothing to do with your facilities, fanbase, history, conference, money, or anything else. It's because Fuente is wired a little differently than most - he is not as ego or money driven as your average CFB coach.
I truly believe that Virginia Tech was the absolute perfect fit for Fuente - he was really looking not just for a football home but for a place to raise his family. This doesn't have anything to do with my homer status - we always knew he was a hot name, especially after the Ole Miss game.
IMHO, Fuente is only gone from Va Tech for a few reasons - either he is on the hot seat or the "perfect" job comes calling. I suspect that it's Notre Dame but never heard it from him directly, that is just an educated guess.
With the aforementioned aside, I think Fuente's kids will be graduating HS in Blacksburg.
Take this post for what it's worth, good luck.
