Any news on Prater?

The recruiting theme for the week in Knoxville has been the wide receiver position. It began with the Vols picking up a pair of noteworthy commitments earlier in the week and continued on Saturday when Kyle Prater, the top-ranked receiver in the nation, arrived in town for an unofficial visit.

Prater (6-foot-5, 205 pounds), from Hillside, Ill., had a couple of previously scheduled visits to Knoxville fall through this summer, but made it a point to get to campus before football season began in earnest.

After leaving, Prater said he's glad he made the effort.

"I really liked it there. Just hanging out with the coaches, talking football with them and also seeing the stadium, I would say those were the best parts about the trip," Prater offered.

"We spent a few hours with the coaches and went on a tour of campus. I got to see the academic side of things, the support they have there. The facilities and all that stuff was great."

Did Tennessee impress Prater enough to get him back for a return trip as an official visitor? Apparently the answer is yes.

"Yeah, they did impress me. I'm coming back down there for an official visit in September," Prater confirmed. "I'm going to be there for the UCLA game on Sept. 12. I'm looking forward to it."

The Vols--and anyone else chasing Prater--hope that he's uncommitted when the visit date for Knoxville rolls around. His first official visit of the season is set for one week prior, to USC on Sept. 5, and Prater is open about the fact that the Trojans are the team to beat.

"USC is out in front, they are kind of standing out right now," Prater said of the Trojans. "I would call everyone else in my top-five mostly equal, but USC is out there ahead a little bit."

The 'everyone else' in addition to Tennessee consists of Alabama, Illinois and Oklahoma according to the recent cut to five schools that Prater released last week.

Prater is a mid-term enrollee, so he hopes to make his official visits in a timely fashion and then have a decision by the 'middle of football season'.

The Vols may have some ground to make up, but with a secured official visit date in hand, they're at least in the game. And Prater headed home with some positive vibes about the Tennessee program and coach Lane Kiffin.

"I really enjoyed talking to him and like his offense a lot," Prater said. "It's a lot like what they still run at USC, they're are a lot of opportunities for the outside receivers to make plays. That offense is smooth."

Rivals.com rates Prater as a five-star prospect, the top receiver in the Class of 2010 and the No. 4 overall prospect in the nation.

The secondary violations concerns without question were an invention of Meyer. IMHO, their recruitment of JS never had anything to do with wanting him but only trying to ensure that UT didn't get it. UM was probably pulled out all of the negative recruiting stops to help steer him to USC.

The "secondary violations" comment by Scroggins was one of several stupid ones. I think it was just random, and most likely a lame breakup excuse from a guy that was 100% USC if they offered.
