With oil and food prices about to go threw the roof, and the likelyhood that my health insurance is about to go up, there is a good chance that I may soon have to give up cable tv and the internet just to make ends meet.

So to get prepared for the "dark ages" I am trying to download as many games as possible on my pc that can be played offline. Im not into puzzle games, am looking for strategy, RPG and maybe even FPS and empie building type games, that are free and legal to dl.
Any good suggestions?

Depends on how you define "legal".

Home of the Underdogs has lots of (very) old abandonware games for free, some are still pretty fun. I know they have PTO 2 for download, that was way ahead of its time as far as grand strategy games go.

well if you just want simple yet addicting games, adultswim.com's robot unicorn attack is generally pretty high up on that list of free online games

edit: of course I now read through the full post rather than the title and see that you're asking for more towards a specific genre and type of game, for free

Spring. It is a Total Annihilation, open source clone that was recently released.

If you never played Total Annihilation, it was a live action game where you mine resources, build various structures and troops, and then try to destroy the opponents base.

Think StarCraft, but not entirely. I haven't tried Spring, yet, but would like to get some time in the future to at least give it a shot.

Link is springrts.com

There are, apparently, a lot of various games running on the Spring engine. If you get interested in the TA side, just go to Games and scroll down to TA-derived.
