the fact that defense does in fact win championships?

i don't like it, but they were very impressive. Gators D > OSU all night long.

can someone tell me exactly how many of their starters will be back next season???? jeez.

I've said it in other threads....I would like to know what the Florida secondary was doing tonight to make Smith freeze like that. But..man...their front men swarmed to take advantage of it. ...and it wasn't just smith...pittmann (sp?) sucked it up to...or appeared to because of a stifling D

but hey...it wasn't just that D....they moved the ball when they had to as well.

Any doubt Fulmer is going to be owned by Meyer the rest of this decade? None in my mind......:cray:

i won't say none, but there is little evidence to support otherwise. coaching + that talent level= championships.

so to recap:
SEC coaches:
Steve Spurrier, 6 SEC titles and 1 NT
march Richt, 2 SEC titles
Urban Meyer, 1 sec title, 1 NT
Phil Fulmer, 2 sec titles, 1 NT

throw in Nick Saban who we also have to play each year and you add 2 more SEC titles and 1 more NT to the list.

CPF aside, that is a strong group of coaches in the SEC: 12 conf. championships, and 4 national titles between them. not too shabby.

I dont think Smith has been running for his life like tonight and Leak made few mistakes. Welcome to SEC D speed

Was there a debate about that?
depends on if you believed what you had been viewing and reading about this game for the past month. so much attention paid to FL's lack of offense thru out the regular season and so much attention put on T. Smith and the OSU offense....some people forgot how good UF's D was/is. they got the cursory, "the D will keep them in the game"...and i know this, cause i was one of 'em.:) but that's about it.

UT choked against PSU.

Arkansas manhandled Wisconsin for the most part but couldn't score.

Michigan got throttled.

OSU got stomped.

The Big10 was down this year. OSU's greatness was an illusion... as was Smith's.

one of them hasn't done anything this decade
yeah, yeah, i know. but just look at that list of coaches. to the regular football fan, that is a hell of a list. and we have to play them all every year.

and i don't necessarily think we'll be getting one this decade either.

the reality is no one is considering Fulmer an elite coach anymore.

i'm not going to debate that point too much. Even here in charlotte, when Saban was hired and they made a point go thru the coaches in the SEC that this affected the most, tubberville and fulmer were the two targeted. and while fulmer gets the general nod as a NT winner and multiple sec title winner...it was quickly followed by "how long do you think volunteer fans will give fulmer?"

everyone kind of knows that there are better coaches in the SEC now than Fulmer. but he is in a different class b/c of the NT. his elite status wore off about 1 second after losing to MD in the Peach bowl.

Troy Smith tonight was a classic example of being rattled by pressure/penetration. Those ends killed those big, slow Buckeye tackles who had been feasting on the Big 10 all year. I'm sure Troy was missing open receivers most of the night. He also had some bad underthrows of open receivers. There is no chance the Gators put both serious pressure on the QB and covered their 4 wideouts.

I think the 50-day layoff really affected Smith in terms of dealing with pressure. Scout team DEs cant match the pressure those big fellas from Florida gave him. Couldn't adjust to the speed all night.

UF did exactly what OSU should have done, pressure the QB and get him rattled. For all his percieved faults, Leak can execute if given enough time. I really question how much tape the OSU coaches watched of UF.
