Any chance

I hope not.
You can stop worrying before you start. There's only one program in the universe foolish enough to pay him even half of what he makes now. I do think MTSU would take him for about a tenth of his current salary. After that, you're pretty much looking at high schools in the Winchester/Tullahoma area.

Fulmer is not a highly regarded coach, that's for sure. For the first half of his tenure it was because of his weight. He was a big guy and a country guy, and that's not what the sports media thinks of as a mastermind-type coach. The media likes schemers and bullies, and Fulmer isn't either one of those types of coaches.

The funny thing is that I think the media's perception of Fulmer was just starting to change at exactly the time the program went south. One of the columnists at the AJC wrote a long article on the Friday before the 2001 SEC championship game was here in town arguing that Fulmer was in fact the best college coach in the country. ("I know he doesn't look like much, and he sounds like a good old boy, but look at the results on the field -- in a state without much homegrown talent.") Then, of course, we tanked in that SECCG, lost 5 games the next year, and have consistently underachieved since then. And that's why today somebody like Cowherd will list six coaches that make the SEC so tough without mentioning our guy.

Not really. In regular season games, CPF is 1-1 vs. Saban.

CPF's lone victory over Saban was a close win even though the Vols were more talented. That same season, Fulmer gets his coaching ass handed to him in the SEC championship. Alabama is about to embark on a ten year win streak over UT.

Nick Saban's regular season win was in OT, so they are a wash.

Obv. the SECCG stands out.

you know, i thought i was in a bad mood yesterday. and then today comes around and this whole Saban thing happens.

i've never seen anything like it.......

i'm still not happy mind you, but good gracious you'd think we should bow out of the SEC unless we fire Fulmer. we have 0 chance of EVER competing again??? mercy.

having said that, i'm not exactly excited about the prospect of playing Meyer, Saban, Richt and Spurrier each and every year. Fulmer's combined record against those 4 isn't good and it isn't good for a reason. i do think that 3 of the 4 are better coaches than Fulmer.

but i'm not ready to concede the top 4 spots in the East just yet.

one of two things is going happen:
1. Fulmer is finally exposed for what many already think and ousted in the next couple of years.
2. we get back to the top and win the SEC. there won't be any middle ground.

I don't think Fulmer can continue win 8-9 games a year and consistently lose 3-4 conf. games a year. if that happens, then you're probably losing consistently to a combination of Bama, SC, GA and/or FL. And that just won't sit well.......with anyone.

it will be interesting to see what happens.
