Sure wasn't about her, after she splattered her body all over the highway. She was dead. I felt sorry for her parents and little sister and I missed her. Still do.

What? Am I supposed to feel sorry for Anthony right now?

I don’t have to know much about his personal life.

The only people hurt by a suicide are those left behind, if you care so little about your loved ones that you willingly put them through that you are selfish.

Of course it's a broad generalization. No one in this thread has any insight into why Anthony Bourdain actually killed himself. That's my point. There is no authoritative conclusion as to 'why' in any suicide. People are forced to draw their own conclusions and it’s all speculation.

When someone dies, it's normal to share memories of the deceased and stories from our own lives which are connected in some way. When someone commits suicide, it prompts expressions of shock, sadness, sometimes anger and discussion of why. At some point, we turn to the memories and stories, even for suicides. Now would be a good time to do this, methinks.

Whether you think it is selfish or not. (I do but can see points on both sides.. maybe selfish isn’t the right word but it’s close... ish)

However, it is a pretty sobering reminder of what you think matters and what actually does... so for the sake of everyone around you.. let’s not forget that lesson.

If he gets ratings he gets a ****load per episode. Scripps had him early on, Discovery had him next and then CNN/TW with very deep pockets. Disney, CBS, Comcast, Fox, Netflix, and Amazon could have all joined in on a massive bidding war.

Googling the definition of selfish:

(of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

So if a person commits suicide for the benefit of others, I guess I wouldn’t say it’s “selfish.” But if the person is leaving loved ones and others behind with burdens (emotional, financial and so on), I would say it’s selfish.

And that is not debating the morality of suicide, the cause of depression, the difficulties of mental health, etc.

I'm not grasping the concept of committing suicide to benefit others. Wonder if my mom would have preferred my dad to have offed himself during those last few years when he was wasting away with ALS in that little house in South Knoxville with her taking care of him? I don't think so.

How would you like to be Bourdain's daughter and get asked every day about why your dad, who had that cool show, went and hanged himself in his hotel room in France? Wonder if that thought even crossed his mind.

It has everything to do with freedom of opinion. That’s been my main point to you, actually.

Most in this thread see both sides and choose to lean one way or the other. You, however, think for whatever reason that your opinion is greater than the others. But it isn't.

I don’t see how any loved ones can be left behind without emotional burdens. I’ve seen the toll it takes on surviving families first hand. It’s just awful.

The daughter is who I feel for the most. Hate it for her. And his mother, who said he was the last person she expected this from. I’m guessing neither of them prefer this ending, either.

Came out of nowhere for you. I've been a loyal follower for 25 years. He has several books including the one Newt just mentioned that are excellent, if you're into that kinda stuff, which unfortunately I am.

The TV series Kitchen Confidential based on the book was the best "restaurant" show I've ever seen.
